This is a slightly different paladin build I went with, partly to take advantage of increased CL on pally spells and possible future benefits for a purer paladin. It gives up a few feats compared to a CoT splash version. No devcrit or anything fancy. Fairly standard str fighter with pally bonuses. I decided to go with longsword due to avalibility. Considering pallies are very useful in Aboleths, I've focused on leveling this character which is a reincarnation of one of my very first HG characters. ;D
This is the version I changed to once I got demi. Smiters are still not the best in terms of damage compared to say the WM option, though they can deal huge amounts of damage all at once to a single or handful of targets which can be fun and useful at times.
Shown at 1x demi with CON artifact, full cleric and bard buffs. Asmo artifact and Cania Pally plate. Top AB is 99.
Starting Stats (after pharlan)
STR 12 (18)
DEX 12
CON 12 <- only do this if you have con artifact to use, otherwise drop str by 2
WIS 10 (14)
INT 14
CHA 16 (20)
I went with 12 base dex here becuase I really wanted skill points. You can change the stats around to make it work for almost any other smiter-type subrace but its generally best if you can start with 20 or 18 cha on a smiter, otherwise you can't get to great smite in time to get all of the feats.

ARTIFACT: Strength OR Con - con artifact (which drops fire immune) goes well with your fire smite and can be fun to use, STR has the nice insta-death ability. I chose the CON artifact.
Skills
Max:
Discipline
Tumble
Listen
Taunt or CA (I like taunt better than CA)
Concentration
43 pts UMD (you could probably get away with less)
-Notes-
You *may* want to substitute toughness and blind fight instead of power attack and divine shield but divine shield is sometimes nice for bonus immunes, bonus AC if you get killed in hells. The damage feedback on it can be problematic however if you're dealing with a lot of KB monsters possibly hitting you.
UMD is one of my favorite things in general and its really nice to have on a paladin so that if you're in a bad situation you can GS without having to rely on GS pots, rings or other things that are harder to get your hands on.
Be sure to use your "minismites" that is the regular smite evils (not just greater smite) on very nasty monsters like bosses and dangerous monsters. It adds your charisma bonus to the attack roll and your class levels to the damage roll, multiplied by 10 since you have 10 great smites. It can give a lot of damage all at once. Especially useful if the monsters in question have heals, sometimes you can hit them hard enough they don't have a chance to heal.
Also don't forget about the pally class secret items . . .you can ask Borian about them.
