Under your main Neverwinter Nights folder there are files called nwn.ini and nwnplayer.ini.
These files can be opened in a standard text editor (such as Notepad). You will note that they consist of several sections, each starting with a name in brackets, e.g. [Game Options]. For each entry mentioned below, if the entry already exists, replace it with the new one given. If it does not exist, add the entry at the end of the section or the end of the file, before the next bracketed section.
NWN only caches a certain amount of information, which can lead to lag as it may have to reload some things from your hard drive. To ameliorate this issue, you can add the Max Memory Usage entry to your nwnplayer.ini file. The default value (if the line does not exist) for X is 16. Other possible valid values are 32 or 64. 64 is only recommended if you have a relatively high-end machine.
By default, NWN runs in full screen mode. The two entries above can be added to your nwn.ini file to allow NWN to run in windowed mode. This mode may offer more performance or stability. If you are used to pressing the mouse pointer against the edge of the screen to turn the camera, be warned that it will no longer work in windowed mode. However, you can hold down the middle mouse button (or press down the wheel if you have a wheel mouse) and move the mouse pointer to swivel the view.
The intro movies make loading NWN slower, and often cause crashes under Windows Vista. Adding the Disable Intro Movies entry above to your nwn.ini file will disable them and solve the issues.
