I am not really a new player but i don't ever take lore with any of my toons, so incidentally, i never really bank. This became more than apparent yesterday in a DB run and to say the least, i feel like a jerk.
For this particular DB run, nobody stepped forward so i volunteered myself to be the bank. We got to the Stairs leading into the furrow and something came up unexpectedly and i had to leave in a hurry, not having much time to say anything more than "Thanks for the party, i gotta jet, sorry about that, etc, etc."
I logged back on today to find a slightly more than perturbed message waiting for me stating "dude...not cool to leave when your bank..." and as i said before, to say the least, i felt like a jerk. in an attempt to ease my conscience, i checked my bags only to find that, yes, i still had the loot from the run the day before. i sent a few interserver messages to the guy who had messaged me (also the party leader) trying to explain that it had been purely an accident and that i felt bad and asking what he thought i should do with the loot and was there anyway i could repay him for his troubles.
i haven't received anything back from him yet, but a local DM suggested that i make this forum post, in order to inform the doubtlessly annoyed other members of the party, as to why i left with the loot. if anyone from the party wants to discuss what happened, feel free to find me on servers (joe_ocal).
although it doesn't matter, there was nothing of any value in the loot that i had, i'm just sorry for the inconvenience.
thanks

Here's another party etiquette question for you guys: I was in a group the other day and we had a picker in the group. One of the group members knew where a secret was, and asked the picker to come over there with him. They picked some chests in there apparently and grabbed some BURs. Then those 2 proceeded to split the BURs between the two of them, and that was never included during the loot split later. Does being a picker or being the person who knows where a secret is, mean that you automatically get that loot for yourself, and don't have to put it in the loot split? If so, I know my next toon is going to be a picker. The way I look at it, if those 2 did not have the team they had with them, they would never have been able to gain access to those chests in the secret area anyways. And doesn't the size of team have something to do with the frequency of BUR drops? That seems like 2 good reasons those BURs should have been in the team loot split.
I have also had so many teams where the team is constantly changing, and at some point the bank always logs off with all the loot. One day I was in a team for like 8 hours straight, doing just about every place / tag you can think of including several dragons, from level 25 up to 40, and as always the bank says "gtg thanks" logs off with 8 hours worth of loot. Some people are really cool and pass on loot (because it's junk to them!) and let the noobs split it up, and some are even nice enough to dig something out of their bank for you, and that is very much appreciated by a new player, but all these teams I've been in the last few days where the bank logs with 15 bags full of loot or only special people in the team get to keep the BURs is starting to annoy me.

That's beyond rude. I'd blacklist anyone that did it constantly. Remember their names, and let others know what they do, if it becomes a habit, especially in LL/Hells, they may find they can't advance.

Rogues don't get any "special" loot privileges when it comes to locked chests etc. That's beyond rude honestly, and goes to the point of theft from players if you ask me. It takes a team to get to that point, even if only two people were needed to get the items.
As for pre-40 loot. It's pretty easy to come buy, and random. Some groups will split the loot when it's been the same group for hours, where some groups change atleast one member every 10minutes and one person banks it and they just happen to need to leave. Pre-40 is pretty loose, which is sometimes unfortunate, but at this point has become pretty relaxed.

it sounds like this was not a hell run... and the fact that they picked 'burs' plural and not just a 'bur' means they were probably just messing around with you. The rest of the party did not comment because they understood, but you being newish (I am assuming you are, feel free to correct me) so you didn't understand the 'private joke'
If it WAS a hell run (or rona, ely, abo) then you need to post some screenies showing that they did indeed loot log. The offenders will quickly become pariahs (not the yummy HG kind) and find no one willing to party with them anymore.
Care to fill out more of the story for us?

Another peice of Party Etiquette is to rez your party members Before you log off. I put it down to the guys i was with being noobs and not understanding hg. In tower (about char level 11) we all died, i logged out then in with a higher lvl toon, rezzed the entire party. then as i was asking for them to rez my dead toon on my return, 2 of them logged off and the other tp'd to town, for ages! in the end rather than fugue i just didnt bother logging back in that server with my dead toon. Just something no one seems to have noticed about this..... Um when you log out dead a skeleton is left behind, this is an avatar of your character. It remains and your fugue timer continues. If you don't use a rez on this character then you fugue. If you do use a rez on it you return alive when u log back in, am I missing something here or did u just not bother rezzing your own avatar? Hey Cata, you are missing the date of that post. That was long before the advent of the skeleton feature.

While we're on the subject... I would like to point out some personal "party etiquette" that I witnessed a few weeks ago that was very classy, and well beyond the call of duty. I was in Nessus with CataclysmicDeath and others, Planewalker dropped before we wiped in the coil. Cata rolled first in the split. His pick was "Pass... I never take loot on failed runs." Despite our urging, and faced with arguably the most sought after set item in HG, Cata stuck to his personal policy. Nope, I did not roll 2nd, but sometimes getting a glimpse of a player's character is more valuable than any item of loot.

The rest of the party did not comment because they understood, but you being newish (I am assuming you are, feel free to correct me) so you didn't understand the 'private joke'. No actually i'm pretty sure that they weren't toying with us. First off, the two people in question didn't seem to know each other, and the person recieving a couple of the items was a noob themself. Also, when they did the transfer you could see XXXX found a ring of blah blah, XXX found a belt of blahblah etc... On the NEXT run we did, the person who recieved the items was asked / volunteered to bank, but before they started picking up loot, they typed !loot list which showed the 2 BUR items of the same type that they had recieved earlier, and they said "These 2 items are MINE, I just want you to see that before I start banking." Keep in mind that at the time that they did the transfer, they didn't tell us "noobs" that they were BUR items, it only came out like an hour later when that person was then stuck with the job of banking. If they were trying to toy with the noobs, I don't think they would have hidden the fact that that the items were BURs, otherwise there would be no joke right? Also worth noting is the other person involved never banked, or typed !loot list to show us what they had acquired, but clearly they had split whatever they had found in the secret chests. So who knows, maybe there were 4 BURs? In the end, yes it is just a game, it's not like the end of the world, and I am not losing sleep over it, I am just saying that it is annoying. And also, I thought maybe there was some un-written rule or something that pickers get whatever they pick or something, it was an honest question. Now that I know this is not the norm, and is considered rude, I'm annoyed even more, but again I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Thanks for the responses. If the situation comes up again, I'll be sure to speak up.

Jazz, Are you sure those toons weren't just transferring items or something? Items obtained via barter give the same "Found" message as those obtained through looting.
If you are ever in doubt about a bank's honesty, ask them to do a !list loot before the party roll. Transperancy keeps people honest.
