ive been trying to get my mircophone to work, but so far, I haven't made any progress.
its a standard thing you plug into the green hole and it used to work when windows was all I had.
any ideas?
ps yes, i havent updated to 9.10 yet - i want to backup all my data before i do...

I had the same problem in Ubuntu 9.04 but after I updated to 9.10 my headphones works just fine. PS. If you have black screen problems in nwn with ubuntu 9.10 try to install libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio, should fix some problems. Not sure does this work: Edit: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1142540&page=3-Vulp

thing is, its the microphone part of the headset that refuses duty, but perhaps upgrading to 9.10 fixes that as well.. might as well start making backups then..

Remember that installing from "clean" (express this in english) is better than pressing that upgrade button in update manager. You will get Ext 4 file system if you install it from begin and remove old system but if you upgrade you will have that old Ext 3 file system what should be little bit slower. Also many people have had better results when they have removed 9.04 during disk partitioning(imho) when installing 9.10.

try unmuting all your mixer levels and turning them up to 75% using alsamixer, or aumix, or the gnome mixer ( just remember to enable all the sliders first in preferences for the volume control applet first )
once u do that, you'll have eliminated one possible failure point which you hadn't mentioned
