Wise Staff (17 Wizard, 22 Weapon Master, 1 Monk)
The idea of this build is a wisdom based Staffmaster, all done with an open subrace.
Staffmasters are a HG specific quasiclass that combines the combat prowess of the Weaponmaster with the arcane might of the Wizard. By counting Weaponmaster levels as Wizard levels for the purposes of some spells, the normal downsides of taking so many non-caster levels are largely offset. There main features are that they get a +10 % bonus to conceal (if they have Weaponmaster levels), reaching 90 % conceal at level 60, and that they enchant they quarterstaff with a very high damage bonus (starting with 3d10 damage, plus 1d10 per 5 weaponmaster levels). The full description for Staffmaster can be found here.
Normally, Staffmasters have strength as their main attribute and as a result a very low armor class - they rely on conceal as their protection and on their soak spells. This Staffmaster uses Wisdom as main attribute! With the HG intuitive attack feat (allows you to use your Wisdom modifier for Quarterstaff) for attack modifier (AB) and a monk splash for monk Armor Class (AC), this Staffmaster has most advantages of a stuffy + high armor class. (at level 60: 134 AC + 85 % conceal, 11d10 magic damage on staff, 95 AB, Saves are 57, 58, 68).
This build has won a second place in the Open Subrace Contest 2011/2012 (Official).
HG Enhanced: Play in !enhmode on. Otherwise, it could be that not all spells or feats are available. See our HG wiki on HG Enhanced for details.
Some hints for playing this Wise Staff
- Level 1: Starting as a weak squishy wizard. First you should do is visit the spell pedestal on the hill behind the chapel at the Docks of Ascension, where the ship arrives, and specialize in the arcane art of Abjuration. Ban the schools of necromancy and enchantment. Specialization in Abjuration, together with Legendary spell focus, will increase the Mage Armor spell to 20 AC (Armor). As a wizard, a good tactic is to cast invisible spell and summon a familiar and a summon and watch them fight your foes.
- Spells: You can learn two new spells when leveling up a wizard level. And you can learn -most- spells from scroll. You can NOT learn HG specific spells from scrolls, so, better learn them at level up. Don't learn necro or enchant spells, you can not cast them anyway.
- Level 15: Congrats, you are now a staffmaster! Buff yourself with every spell that helps and play from now on as a tank. Its not a shame to have 20-30 spells in the autocaster. Tensor's last 1 turn (1 minute) per level. Buff your quarterstuff with blackstaff. Its a good idea to quickslot !damfi and the other commands (see your journal). Just right-click on an empty quick-slot, write "Fire" and "!damfi" and so on. Later on, you can switch the damage type in the battle and see what does best damage. Note that the blackstaff damage overrides other damage of same type, you rarely want fire or elec on the staff since it is buffed anyway.
- Scribe scrolls: Remember that you can scribe scrolls. Buy some 50 scroll packs in town, unfold them to 10 packs and make yourself some bbod (black blake of disaster) and gs (greater sanctuary) scrolls. Very handy! Bbod can tank and even kill some critters, gs can make you mega-invisible and should be in yours quickslots. Problems with a Lich? GS + bbod is the answer...
- Level 20: Ethereal Visage last now also 1 turn per level. That helps a lot to your dodge rate (aka your rate not to be hit).
- Level 21: With intuitive attack, your wisdom modifier is now applied to AB. (The character sheet shows misleading wrong values. Type !list AB in the command line to check your AB).
- Level 36: Now you can cast Magic Damage on the staff. Exotic damage (like magic) is most time superior to elemental damage.
- Level 40: At level 40, a monk level increases your AC significantly - Your wisdom modifier is added to your AC and you can rise your tumble skill to base 43 (that gives +8 AC). At level 40 the Wise Staff becomes really powerfull. Enjoy!!! At this level, your Mordankine's Sword spell summons a ~Caligrosto~, a magical construct that is really a terror.
- Keep an eye open for items with protection from breach spells and protection from Mordenkainen's disjunction. These spells debuff your spells and are really problematic for staffmasters. There are set rings of it, and ultra rare versions (Mallek's Answer and Abjurer's Bane). Try the !bazaar channel and make an offer, maybe someone helps you out.

Higher Versions
Look out for these subraces to reincernate your open Wise Staff with better subrace
- Secret: Kenku (only an option in -HC- since UR is easy to get with money)
- UR: Startgazer (They cost some 10 k in my experience, ask around and check the market)
- BUR: Undying ("easy to get" for a BUR subrace) or Drow Noble ("expensive"), see also this build
