Most shifters running around on HG are based on tyranlthixis' ability mage build with high caster level, and a few is pure tank with low caster level. The point of this build is to play as a versatile tank (humanoid forms) for different circumsdances without losing too much fun of insta killing (mortal strike, death gaze) and damage outputting from abilities which scales on caster level (55CL for this build).
All shifter forms have been customized on HG. If you are a new comer on this server, please check this post for detailed informations of shifter.
Here's my build:
9Druid/5Ranger/26Shifter
Elf/Grey Elf
Alignment: Any Neutral
subrace: "Grey Elf"
- STR -2, INT +2, +2 Hide/MS
Pros:
- Easy to gear up, great fun to play. You can play as a tank (str, dex or uni), an insta killer, a damage dealer, a supporter or just a slacker
- 6 attacks per round (humanoid forms only).
- Good AB, AC and saves as an open subrace build
- Decent concealment (about 60% with mass camouflage on)
- Decent strength/dexterity for various ability checks
- Immunity to poison effect from viper trees
- Slag proof as long as you are shifted.
- True fear immunity from wisdom arti, totally immune to death knight's turning ( wisdom check vs DC 40, but you have 68 wisdom
Cons:
- Shifting takes ages to complete!!!
- Lack of poison immunity vs paragon pit fiend, paragon osyluth (Rachugon) etc., you need a myco shield to tank those mobs.
- DC of insta killing abilities is 3 less than BUR subby.
- Low discipline on non strength forms or while you are unshifted.

Animal Empathy: For spells cast while shifted, Shifters use Animal Empathy instead of Lore for damage bonuses. In addition, most Shifter abilities can receive up to a 100% damage bonus from the Animal Empathy skill.
Concentration: There are various concentration checks on some maps on HG. For example there's a concentration check: DC 40 vs Death from Voidwaiths in Catacombs of Dulvuroth.
Parry:
- Reduces damage taken from critical hits. The total damage taken is reduced by 1% per 2 points of Parry skill above 20, to a maximum of 50% with a skill of 120.
- A skill of 100 or higher grants immunity to Assassin Mortal Strike.
To maximize parry skill is the main reason that I chose elf for this build. Parry is not class skill of shifters. But elf has able learner which makes it possible to maximize parry skill at the price of more points invested on it.

Listen: Listen skill increases your chances of hitting concealed enemies. Some abilities of your forms also rely on high listen skill to hit targets with concealment, dire tiger's shadow attack for example.

Discipline: Discipline skill is very important to protect you from being slagged, KDed or disarmed. For example, cinderscales in phleg can slag your armor and shield with discipline check vs DC90 or knock you down with discipline check vs DC100. This build takes only 43 discipline skill due to lack of skill points. At double demi, your two strength tank forms, drow warrior and lizardfolk whipmaster will have 124 and 127 discipline skill respecitively which is enough for most checks. However you are still vulnerable to those effects if you are caught in shifting between forms. So please play cautiously when there are mobs around that can KD/slag/disarm with high discipline checks.

Shield: Generally I equip different shields depending on what I want from them. As I have mentioned above, when I have to tank paragon pit fiends or osyluths, I'd put on the myco shield. If there is a superior Lemur around, I'd swap to a shield with daze immunity.
Motes: Depending on your gear set, I'd put on mote with listen, hide, parry or animal empathy skill bonus.
Augmenters: anything with listen, parry, hide and animal empathy bonus.
Play style
- Insta kill: drow warrior's mortal strike on mobs not immune to critical hit, basilisk's death gaze on mobs without death immunity.
- Tank: drow warrior/lizardfolk for pit fiends and mariliths, kobold commando for malebranches, brood serpents and balors.
- Debuff: harpy's curse song, lizardfolk's or wyrmling's immunity infliction
- Disable: medusa's stone gaze, gletinous cube's disarm and dire tiger's knockdown
- Deal damage: beholder's cold/neg ray, manticore's spikes and kobold commando's trap
- Slack: take Kenku form and shoot behind your party members .

Update ( December 6th, 2011)
1. Change pre epic class combinations from 8druid/5ranger/7shifter to 8druid/4ranger/8shifter and move the last ranger level to level 40.
2.Swap Epic Prowess to Epic Fortitude. Take Epic Prowess as bonus feat at the 5th ranger level. Swap Legendary Fortitude to Legendary Reflexes.
2. Dump discipline skill to 43 at level 40 and decrease craft weapon skill from 55 to 35. Now drow warrior form should have 124 discipline at double demi, and lizardfolk should have 127 discipline skill at 2x.
I appreciate suggestions from maljin and tyranlthixis. Your comments are of great help to improve this build.

AC of drow warrior and sahuagin looks a bit of low (127) at first glance, but you will get about 60% concealment from mass camouflage if you have your hide skill maxed. So the defence is not bad actually, just do not get yourself overwhelmed.

Weapon: any type weapon you can wield

Shield: Generally I equip different shields depending on what I want from them. As I have mentioned above, when I have to tank paragon pit fiends or osyluths, I'd put on the myco shield. If there is a superior Lemur around, I'd swap to a shield with daze immunity.
Motes: Depending on your gear set, I'd put on mote with listen, hide, parry or animal empathy skill bonus.
Augmenters: anything with listen, parry, hide and animal empathy bonus.
Play style
- Insta kill: drow warrior's mortal strike on mobs not immune to critical hit, basilisk's death gaze on mobs without death immunity.
- Tank: drow warrior/lizardfolk for pit fiends and mariliths, kobold commando for malebranches, brood serpents and balors.
- Debuff: harpy's curse song, lizardfolk's or wyrmling's immunity infliction
- Disable: medusa's stone gaze, gletinous cube's disarm and dire tiger's knockdown
- Deal damage: beholder's cold/neg ray, manticore's spikes and kobold commando's trap
- Slack: take Kenku form and shoot behind your party members .

Update ( December 6th, 2011)
1. Change pre epic class combinations from 8druid/5ranger/7shifter to 8druid/4ranger/8shifter and move the last ranger level to level 40.
2.Swap Epic Prowess to Epic Fortitude. Take Epic Prowess as bonus feat at the 5th ranger level. Swap Legendary Fortitude to Legendary Reflexes.
2. Dump discipline skill to 43 at level 40 and decrease craft weapon skill from 55 to 35. Now drow warrior form should have 124 discipline at double demi, and lizardfolk should have 127 discipline skill at 2x.

Update ( February 5th, 2012)
1. Give stats of humanoid forms prior demi as tyran suggested.
2. Add gear suggestion on shield and mote slots.
