Hi HG Wizards,
There's something strange going on when I log in to Higher Ground. Sometimes, my usual old list of characters is available minus one character. Sometimes, only that one missing character which I recently created is available. Occasionally, I get a list of about a dozen first level characters which I have not ever created.
This all happens using the same user name, password, CD keys, computer, and Internet connection. I can log in to a server, log out, and log in again to a different character list.
If I'm not mistaken, I've also logged in with a slightly different user name and still obtained my longer list of characters. I used "Ian_the_Unobtrusive" rather than "Ian_the_unobtrusive". (I recently re-installed NWN, and I couldn't remember which version I was using.)
Regarding that list of first level characters which I never created: If it helps at all, I remember that one of them was called Bob Bobby.
The odd one out of all of my characters is Eara Choug-HC-ry. I think that I end up with only her more than half the time.
Can you help me get all of my characters back onto a single list?
Cheers.
Ian

Playernames are case-sensitive, which is probably why you're having this issue. We can probably combine your playernames. Unfortunately I'm not near a computer where I can easily access the servers at the moment, but another DM can hopefully help you.

I'll be surprised if that's it, because I can log in, log out, and log in again without touching either playername or password, and get two different lists.

Umm...do you have 2 computers you're connecting from? If so, you might want to check if the other account is the one you're seeing. If it is, change the Client Port in nwnplayer.ini to one either computer (NOT both) something else (5125, for instance) and see if that fixes it.

Since before this problem cropped up, I've only been using one computer. In the past, I have logged in with a friend's computer using the same user/password and CD keys. However, I haven't done that in a while, and the problem only occurred recently. It's all been on one machine.
In nwnplayer.ini, my Client Port is 5120. Given that I'm only dealing with one computer, is there any reason to change that?

Ian I'd be surprised if that's not it, especially since your tale of seeing random level-1 toons that you never made meshes perfectly with my own experiences of accidentally altering login and having no idea what is going on. The key here is the case-sensitive part. My guess is that you unwittingly began creating toon(s) on the "other" account and were swapping back and forth between them without realizing it, to the point that now you can barely tell what is what.

Is it possible that he's using the public CD key from GOG and someone else is making toons on his account? That wouldn't explain the disappearing/reappearing toons, but it might be something to look at.

The HG servers are configured to block the GoG public key(s).

My guess is that you unwittingly began creating toon(s) on the "other" account and were swapping back and forth between them without realizing it, to the point that now you can barely tell what is what. You are correct. I made two mistakes: (1) getting the case of a letter in the user name wrong, and (2) not posting here that I was starting NWN using arf2. I inadvertently created two accounts differing in the user name by the case of a single character. Now that I know that, I can access all of my characters as long as I don't use arf2. Thank you all for the help in figuring out what the main issue is. Using arf2, things are a bit more confusing. I can log into the desired account when arf2 first starts, but things are hit and miss thereafter if I try to log into the other account. Restarting arf2 doesn't solve the problem. It would certainly be most convenient for me if someone could clean up my mess and stick all of my characters back under one account. If that's troublesome, I can work around it. Ian

I don't use ARF2 except to check for and update CEP & HGE

I'll do the same. Problem solved.
Thanks!
