Hello everyone, I got a few questions about some character ideas I got and technical part of it on how to do it. First things first... I'd like to make my base character being a feline character, including the technical and roleplay-wise negative sides of it, like not being able to use any weapons, having talking difficulties, perhaps ending up as a servant/slave. I'd like to ask if one can do such and if can, how it should be done on technical side, please? Thank you very much forwardly for the patience and the help.

There really isn't too much roleplaying done here that I'm aware of, so unless you have a group ready to do some roleplaying with you may have difficulty with that.
However we do have a "roleplaying" server (although usually used only by hardcore players and often others stopping in to use the bank). We also have a very friendly community and if you post some interest in other subforums you may be able to find some fellow RPers. There is certainly absolutely nothing about the mod or the server which prevents, inhibits, or estranges roleplayers. In fact do to the brilliant SIMTools we have many devices here which make roleplaying great.
That said I would have to be honest and "warn" you that, again, roleplaying is not big here and the majority of players are more "power" oriented. The mod storyline is quite intricate and well-done and certainly lends itself well to anyone wishing to roleplay. Keep in mind though that most players here "move" very quickly and due to the high-powered nature of the mod it will likely be difficult to progress very far with a character that can't talk or wield a weapon.
I doubt anyone except a DM could really comment on your idea of tailoring a certain pheno to your character idea. However we have a great subrace system here and it is possible to play a feline subrace as well as use the Doppelganger subrace to complete the "Badger's Challenge" and then transform into any available pheno you desire (there are some requirements for this, including being Medium size).
Anway, figured I would mention what I coudl and try to be of some help. It's great to see your interest in the game here and by all means stop by the forums as much as desired to ask questions. Jumping right into the game is a great idea and you can use the !newbie channel (to use, type " !newbie <message> " which is a global shout which people answer. This is a great way to get immediate feedback/answers on questions and you are virtually guaranteed a response quickly; as I said we have a very friendly and helpful playerbase and are usually more than happy to help newcomers in any way possible.
Good luck and see you ingame soon!

+1 ...and the badger's quest is a great way to make your way through a ton of really cool plot line and mod content. Additionally, you might be able to adopt a felinoid appearance via the crafting options for helms. I am positive that lupoid is one of the options, since I used it for a while, but I am uncertain about the "cats" options. The chances of you becoming a slave/servant unless you can find a dom/master on purpose are zero. Fear not unless you so desire. Hope that provides hope.

Thank you for the answers. Then I'll think out a starting character to peek into the game and ask my questions there, including to get the feel of the game. What does this power-oriented gaming means here? I mean, it is like to "get cool stuff and high on power ranks fast without stuff", or just to be a strong warrior to slay dragons for daily living? On feline subraces, I confess most of the subrace names mean nothing to you and I confess I can not really decide which is which, so I'd like to ask for some help in that too, later. As well, a class suggestion could be helpful as I played the game a few times but the classes thing is a bit dizzling for me, I can not find that one that seems right for the character I do, any kind of character that is... Thank you again very much, I'll try my best to get into the game, I am just taking my time well. Thank you again for the help and the tips.

Some subraces that have custom cat-like appearances: Name - Rarity - Typical Classes - Appearance DescriptionWemic - BUR - Ranger - Like a cross between a horse and a cat Doppelganger - UR - Any wis-based? - Multiple (see The Badger's Challenge) Rakshasa - Secret - Sorcerer - Cat face and body, standing on 2 legs Click here for more info on SubracesThe "power gaming" means that people generally aren't concerned about RP here, and just want to go on end-game run progressions (Hells, Abyss) and get the best loot available. Even in low levels, many parties will try to go through all the tags as fast as possible. But don't worry. There have been other people who have come around and expressed interest in RP. If you stay around for long enough, perhaps you can find some of those people, and get a group together that is primarily focused on RP. The mod is certainly capable of it, if you have the people. I would use the forums (in the Schedule section) to organize a RP group to meet at a particular time. I wouldn't mind incorporating some more RP elements into the daily powergaming-- for example, custom crafted appearances, use of emotes, character backstories and personality, etc. However I do find hard-core, serious RP to be a bit tiresome.

What is Yukio? More of a fox-human? They are kind of cat-like. Welcome to the game, letrune. You've been given a lot of useful advice already. I don't have much to add other than my own experience on this server. I've never played a MMO-like game before and I'm a big fan of role-playing games - with real role-playing. Sometimes I can get a bit too obsessed with story and plot and character backgrounds. When I started on HG, I immediately went to the RP server because I thought I'd want to "role-play". Well, I soon found out that there is very little role-playing to be had on HG. In fact, the first PC I encountered on the "RP" Server had the name "Gnoll Barbarian" - in stark contrast to the rules of the RP server Having said that, I've been playing this game exclusively since I started a year ago. If I were to tag the reasons for it, I think it would be: - the people here are wonderful - the richness and depth of the game world are amazing - the developers are extremely dedicated to constantly improving the game (from fixing typos to adding new spells and game mechanics) - Hard Core (HC) play After I started, I soon gravitated to Hard Core play. There are many reasons for that, but one reason is that the actual threat of death (i.e., character deletion) made it more real for me. It helped bring the game closer to that actual role-playing that I desired when I first started. Obviously, the chance of losing a coveted character forever is too much for most people - there are many philosophical debates that could be had regarding that subject but it all boils down to individuals wanting different things from their game time. Incidentally, I finally got the role-play experience that I desired when I tried out something called R-HC- mode. Others call it "Real Hard Core", but I call it "Role-play Hard Core" I will forever treasure the experience of adventuring with my goblin wizard teamed up with Tele's goblin wizard - I wish I had preserved our conversations Again, welcome to HG, and I hope you find something here that entertains you at least half as much as it entertains me - Niilo

Thank you very much for all the tips and good wishes. I hope to start the game soon, just the technical difficulties and the game are needing some help... I wish to know how much one can customize the character's look, and where I could read a bit more of the world one lives in - perhaps I'd try a sort of "unwantedly-becomes-a-hero" type of character, and later do as I wish. For such a character idea I wrote up above, being more like a hunting-crafting by profession, what class I might choose? Or there are any class that is more for helping others and/or crafting things? Also, as curiosity, if I unlock a subrace, I might redo a new character with that subrace, naming the new one as a follower of the previous one? For if yes, I might got a sort of story idea for the characters. I confess the idea for losing a beloved character forever for me is a bit too much, too, yet losing a few things and ideas are all right for me. There are such modes?

For such a character idea I wrote up above, being more like a hunting-crafting by profession, what class I might choose? Or there are any class that is more for helping others and/or crafting things? Hmm... The gnomish inventor is certainly a crafter for sure, though I'm not sure if you want to go with the theme of an insane, explosive creator . Most crafters on the server though are wizards, making wands and scrolls for people. Potion crafters really aren't as useful with easily available purchasable potions which are far better than what can be easily made. I suppose you could also make a theurge crafter, means you get divine and arcane spells that you can scribe and wand craft. I suppose ranger fits the hunter role well, though there aren't a lot of good things to craft from a ranger. Finally, Harper Scouts can make some unique potions, but that's more of a side-class than a core class. Still, they have a few useful things, like greater restoration potions, available to them. Finally, for helping others and party support, bard takes the cake on that. Could go cleric as well, they have a lot of support spells, heals, regen, restoration, etc. Though they're also expected to implode stuff. You could make a cleric wand-crafter though, and scroll crafter, but that probably means giving up one epic foci. You can use the reincarnation system to upgrade a character's subrace, but you essentially need to get the subrace twice. (Once to unlock, once to upgrade)

Thank you for the help. I wish to ask now what foci means? Also, there are more things to craft than wands and potions? Cleric as far as I see seems a fine role, yet the divine things are seem hard to me, but I guess I can go with it. On subraces, a new character might be easier to start with a won subrace than reincarnating the older one, isn't it?

Foci is the term for multiples of spell focus, greater spell focus, epic spell focus, etc. HC is good fun but not if you're worried about losing characters although once you get to immortal status the chance of this when playing in one of our parties is much reduced. Due to the restriction on using the better subraces in place now (level 50 to use an UR subrace book and level 60 to use a BUR subrace book) you'll be playing for a while until you get the chance to use one but at that point it may be a possibility to reincarnate your base character using one of the new races you have access to (certain requirements apply). Have fun playing

Thank you for all the ideas and tips, I am pretty well now with the game I think, however, I am not sure how and where I could find a team for myself... People seem to be really high leveled for my first one. I read something about level caps and so, but I am not really sure if I understand it well - it means that about 5 levels difference are only acceptable?

Players can party with anyone within 6 levels (inclusive) of themselves. Legendary+ levels don't count towards this cap. (e.g. A level 24 could party in a group that had levels 26-30, but a level 23 could not. Also, a level 34 can party with anyone 34-80).

Make good use of that !newbie channel when you're in the game. You could use this channel to ask if other people are interested in joining you. Many people will have low-level toons that they just aren't playing at the moment.

Thank you for the tips. Another question... Where can I get more technical help on classes and the playstyle of theirs, please?

Crafting has two meanings here. First, it means making items that are usable in the game, like wands, scrolls, potions, and the like. basically, making tools of various kinds.
Second, and probably more important for you, crafting means making extant things look the way you want them to look given the options available. If you talk to the alchemist in town you can obtain items that will altar the colors of anything you can equip. You can also (by right clicking on your character and selecting the anvil) change the appearance of your equipped gear. Furthermore, there is a command that allows you to change the energy type that displays on your weapon. These options allow you to do everything from making an kobold fishmonger who swings a decent sized dead fish at enemies to assembling a renaissance fop decked out in baby blue and white and sporting an ostrich feather in the brim of your swashbuckling hat ala the three musketeers.
Regarding play styles, most of the information is basically tactical in orientation and can be found on the wiki entry if you search by class. The link for the wiki is found at the top of the homepage for these forums. Also, you can check out the stickied entries under "character build discussion" on these forums for more general good building practices.
The installation guide and getting started links at the top of the wiki homepage are quite helpful regarding technical issues, which I hope have been resolved already.
