How about a one time use item that when consumed would grant a character meta magic spell casting feats permanently? Much like how some existing items give epic spell focus XYZ, these items would give meta magic feats like Empower Spell, Maximize, Silent, or Still. Perhaps the book would grant several and come in different flavors. Three feats per item? two perhaps?

oh and taking these excludes you from using an item that gives epic spell focus feats permanently

An Extend spell pandect would be helpful enough I think.

I was going to say a pandect would likely be the best option maybe add a pandect that lets you get Extended, Maximize, or Empower metamagic.

I can't deny that such a pandect *would* be awesome, and would be an excellent alternative option to the Shield or Summoning Pandects for casters.
Of course, I also always saw the Pandects as the fighter's versions of Wonderous Tomes of Ancient Lore.... so yeah...

If such an item were made, I would rather it didn't drop at Min with the other pandects, which are already in high demand. I do think it's a good idea to make it a pandect, though. Just drop it someplace else. Perhaps an abyss run?

A new set of pandects dropping else where is interesting but let both sets be flagged as pandects so you can't use a book from set Min and where ever the new set it placed.

i don't think the pandect slot it enough because with the exception of the convenience of shield prof on a mage i cant think of a pandect i would take in place of a meta feat (meaning it would be a bonus to my casters will little cost rather than a build option)
if it takes the place of the ESF tome "slot" then its more of a build choice that might appeal to certain caster tanks like pally and assassin, than a direct increase in character power.
you could have: Tome of the skillful spellcaster gives the character still spell, silent spell and quicken spell
Tome of the powerful spellcaster gives the character empower, maximize and extend spell

I dont think anyone would ever pick the skillful tome, because it is effectively 1 usefull feat vs 3 feats from either powerful spellcaster tome or from current ESF tome. A pandect that gives extra metamagic would also be useful for some tanks, like ranger or paladin. I mean, as of current they generaly pick tome for stronger gmw/bladethirst, but instead they could pick tome for extend crit imm etc.
Anyways, I think this topic has been discussed somewhere in past, with the result of it being bad overall idea. Unless I remember it all wrong, but concidering it'd only add more power to casters who are alrdy strongest I dont really find need for this.

I would have the book tome or pandect only grant 1 meta magic maybe 2 1 from the "skillfull" list of petes and 1 from the "powerful" list
