Hello All! I am a long-time NWN player, but have not played in a few years with things shifting around with life (I'm sure everyone knows how it is). I have never actually played Higher Ground but it seems like it is one of the servers that has sustained itself through everything that has happened with BioWare! Anyway, I will have a newly designed gaming PC ready by this Thursday along with everything else I need to successfully operate . I wanted to say hello before coming into the game so I can at least break some ground on getting to know you all. It's possible I have played with some of you in the past and I am fairly good at remembering names. I have chosen a new name - Erebus (obviously, since it shows it here). Previous names I've had are: Aero, Exodus, Lucifer, Frost. I've played on numerous PvP and PvE/Questing servers in the past: LOD, LOC, DeX, Howard's, Badlands, BoW, the list goes on and on. This isn't about me though, I want to learn about all of you and about Higher Ground, and I'm hoping there will be some of you that will be willing to aid me in restarting my adventure here. In any case, it's great to see that there are still people out there that enjoy this fantastic game. Thanks for reading and putting up with this! I will be seeing you all in-game shortly! P.S. - From my understanding, the only way to connect is via Direct Connect?

If you modify some of the NWN files you might can add them to your favorites manually also there is a community client or hak which fixes it to use a new master server list. There is a post about it somewhere as well there is the ARF2 which can be used to update your HG required and optional files as well it can launch the game and initiate the direct connect.

You can use ARF2 or NWNCX to connect as well. ARF2 only supports HG while NWNCX fixes the in-game server listing (and lists many servers, possibly including some of the ones you've previously played). If you don't want to download extras, there are also instructions somewhere on the forums here on how to add the HG servers to your History/Favorites. If you're a linux/mac user, your only option may be the History/Favorites trick. Even in Wine, ARF2 didn't work when I tried it, and I've never tried NWNCX. Neither supports linux/mac natively (and I don't think ARF2 could even be made to, since it uses the +connect direct-connect method). Welcome to HG, Erebus --Arek

Thank you for the welcome's everyone! Also - Thank you to Yojimbo and Arek for the information on the clients to use. I will mess around with the program a bit once I can install it. Are there any haks I need to DL for HG? Anything I should know before starting?

You need CEP, see wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/Installation_Guide I recommend to use ARF2. Its described there. Running arf will download and update CEP. click on Options for the HGenhanced and for the Modified Client Executable. Welcome to this plane! And have a look on: wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/Getting_Started The open subrace forum has some very good builds for new players. Yours Torin

Here, check this out: wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/Installation_GuideRequired: Both NWN expansions, and CEP Almost-required: Higher ground enhanced Hak (once downloaded, use the command !enhmode in game to turn it on) Optional but also recommended: Transparent GUI, Modified EXE, Additional quickchats, HGX

Thanks everyone! I am looking forward to it all! Quick question - would it be more beneficial to start off with a melee character or a sorc? I'm not sure how the early leveling is hah

Leveling is very easy and quick, due to alot of questgivers at the docks that give great xp if you follow their questlines. These can be combined nicely with getting tags (accomplishements often for slaying a certain monster), which is a great way to get to know the server and areas. To check your accomplishments and what you should do next just use the !list acc prell command ingame. Sorc is for sure one of the quickest and easiest to level up if you play it right. There is also a reincarnation system here, where you can reincarnate your toon to something new/better later on. e.g. you could level up a sorc to level 40 and then reincarnate it into a tank, or the other way around as long as it is not immortal yet. That will be your first big step on hg in the progression of your character.

I find it easier to gear a tank and thus play it well in LL, Legendary Levels(41-60), but in pre LL, levels 1-40, I find a caster can often get by more easily due to their power.
