Sad, but not surprising, which is sad again.
I understand he was a code contributor. Is there any concern that his contributions might contain deliberate bugs/backdoors that facilitated his cheating? If there were, having him out of DM access would probably render them harmless, but I wonder... has his code been vetted, or are there any plans to do so?

If there were, having him out of DM access would probably render them harmless, but I wonder... has his code been vetted, or are there any plans to do so? Yes, it's been vetted. Fortunately, he wasn't a superb coder (though he was better than most we've had, acaos and myself aside). As a result, acaos and I were frequently having to fix his edits, resulting in far too much oversight for him to get up to any real mischief. Whether or not that played into his reasons for not attempting that kind of thing, I don't know. He didn't really have to edit anything to get up to a great deal of mishchief just with the ability to set variables, given the knowledge provided by access to the codebase. We also have some experience with this kind of thing, since the original Team left some backdoors intended to crash the server (presumably a safeguard against theft, which was a real concern back in the day - it just wouldn't work with HG now, without the database to go with it, there's too much interdependancy). I can say with fair confidence that his ability to cause further problems outside the scope of a typical player has been neutralized, and some of the worst damage undone. Funky

I am very saddened this day.
The actions taken by dev staff were in my opinion fair, just and temperate.
My dilemma is that I have and DO consider Werehound a friend, and thus would very much hate to see him leave HG.
Having been punished for his actions; should he choose to stay, I would be happy to help him with Gold, Gear and subbies of choice.
Yes, he made some wrong choices in my opinion, but as a friend I feel compelled to show support and give him help when things look darkest and not just when a friend is doing well.
I very much believe in second chances and hope that with time he will come back, to just play and enjoy the game we all love.

I owe the community an apology.
For the past year I'd become increasingly restless. Where most people just up and leave, I decided to make the game "more fun" for me and in the end ruined many others' fun. I should have just left.
95% of the items I sold were legitimately earned, and not a result of excess spawning; the rest despawned as I moved through maps. My reasoning for doing it was to see, exactly, could possibly drop. It should have been done on the development server.
I cannot make this up to the community, and for that I am deeply sorry.
Don't give up on HG; Funky and the team have wonderful things in store for everyone and they are more than capable of undoing the damage I've done.
I wish you all the best.

I'm not such a forum poster, but this just makes me so angry. Together with this I remember the time i was playing with fresh 60 toons i already wondered how the hell he could pull of more then quadruple the kills of any other toon in runs. Sorry to say but when he ever comes back he has to work really really hard to gain any respect from me. He ruined the fun of many players. Especially with his crazy number of kills and damage output of most of his toons.

Funky has taken suitable and necessary measures.
That aside, I like Werehound and hopes he remains. He is a nice guy and a fine player: We can never have too many of either.

Good job acaos and funky. Thank you - I appreciate the way the community is handling this news. Laser is also owed a debt of gratitude, for his vigilance. Funky

Funky,
Thank you for being up front on this and letting us know what all happened. I regret that this occurred, but I really appreciate you being so forthcoming.
Here's hoping that the next surprise you get is a pleasent one!

This is very unfortunate news.
Funky, thank you for how you treated the situation. I agree that a complete ban isn't necessary, if Were wants to be a part of the community and rebuild his reputation, he should be allowed.
Were rose to DM status much quicker than normal due to his ability to code and did contribute to the server. It's unfortunate that the temptation proved too much to resist. I wondered how Were could solo Abo1+2 to quickly. I very much enjoyed doing runs with Were and would be happy to have him join my group at a later time. The fact that many items either tweaked or "obtained through unfair power" were sold or traded is the most upsetting part.
Now that I'm a family man with much smaller segments of game-play time combined with the low availability of runs, I'm basically inactive. However I haven't missed a post on this forum in 6 years and excited for EE.

I think that Werehound has showed some strength of character here for apologizing and attempting to explain his actions.
