Got a copy of the GoG NwN Diamond. Installed it and checked to make sure it worked. Copied my entire NwN HG folder on top of that install (so it's got the same location as the install - and all the CEP and HG stuff) BUT - It just crashed without getting to the main screen.
Started over with the clean install (THAT works). So I've done the 1.69 update (still works). Working on the CEP install (ARF aint helping) Something ain't going right there. After copying all the CEP files over - it stopped working. Makes NO Sense.
Starting over AGAIN - fresh install - different folder. Gonna make a backup before CEP (I'm using 2.4) and then do it one folder at a time.
The NwNLoader program only looks a hardcoded location on the C: drive (which I am not using) Can't get it to change.
The links for HGE/HGX are dead. Arf2 is being a witch and not helping at all. Can i just copy my old HGE and HGX files from the old folder? (like I did with Arf2)
Dayam, it's lot of work just getting BACK to being able to play HG.

Assumptions - what do they always say about assumptions? I guess i only "assumed" the game was running right when the Main Screen came up. Silly me. When I hit NEW - the program goes sideways and exits.
I thought it might be because of the Critical Update (the GOG version is already the 1.69.8xxx version - same as after the Critical Update) So I deleted it all and did a fresh install AGAIN. Hit NEW, and it went to the Char Creation Screen! woot! I copied over CEP (which doesn't overwrite anything!) and the game goes sideways on NEW.
Got a Fresh install AGAIN and I don't know what to do. I am getting tired of deleting and reinstalling. Right now it runs. No CEP. NO HGE. But what good is that? Anyone have ANY clues? Haven't even gotten far enough to worry about the GOG CD Keys vs my CD keys. And then there is the Username and password. More roadblocks. Maybe that's my sign, "Road Closed".

Have you tried to use Arf2 if nothing else this is good for getting all the required files up to date?

If I run Arf2 on the fresh install, it says I don't have the 1.69 update. When I do the Critical update, Arf2 tells me I don't have CEP and offers to download it for me, but the link fails.

When I did a clean install, I used the manual files provided at the bottom of the page wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/Installation_Guide. I never used the ARF2, since it only produced errors for me as well. Besides, if u have your complete old folder with everything installed, why do u need to reinstall anyway? Just run the the game out of the existing folder. NWN doesn´t have to be installed to work.

Skimmers! I tried a new install becasue my old HG folder generated numerous missing file messages. As soon as I would find and replace one, it would identify the next one missing. I got tired of that. It said to reinstall to correct the problems.
The first thing I tried was loading the HG folder on top of the new install. (Paragraph #1) Then I tried using Arf2 Then I tried doing it all manually
I even copied over my nsncskey.ini nsnplayer.ini files (so Arf2 would quit telling me I was using GoG CD Keys)
I even tried pointing Arf2 to the CEP rar file, but it expected to find 7za.exe on my system. I assumed that meant 7zip - so I downloaded that too. Nope. 7za was a standalone version of 7zip - different executable. Got that one, Put it right in the Nwn folder. Arf2 found it, but then couldn't process the rar file.
Guys, I wasn't young when I played here, and my brain isn't getting any better with age. This is all majorly frustrating. It's just one thing after another.

Forget all that - I'm LIVE on the Server! I'm BAAAACK !
(and the username was in the player.ini and the password stumped me for a minute (but I got it on the second or third try) Got all my awesome toons without DM intervention.
I have NO idea what was different. I litterally started NwN betweeen each folder of CEP files. And it kept working - all the way thru. Now all I'm missing is HGE /HGX. Can i just copy those 6 or 8 files to the new folder (as the links for those apps are dead)

Good to see you online and levelling away , if you come across any accomplishments that are tricky to solo ping me a message if I'm online and I'll see what I can dig out to assist you as I have a load of characters hanging around at various levels.

Will Do. Looks like I'm one of the few that only play one toon at a time - lol. It's about all I can handle to do ONE - hahahaha. My new toon is lvl 35, and was humbled yesterday repeatedly -lol. Gonna have to check the boards to see what other type of toon I can go with next. Somthing HG purposed. It was fun getting to re-visit all the areas and remind myself who, what, when, and where. I also need to go thru my existing toons to see what ones I remember how to play - lol.
Made it down tot he Spider Queen, she killed me. Made it thru the Kyori to Manatakloss back gate, didn't make it to the gate. Madeit allt he way into the second level of Zhents - and knew better than to open any of "those doors". lol Went back to the Shadow Elves to get that potion, and "remembered" once you go up, you either win or die. Got the potion. A wise sage once said, "A Man's got to know his limitations". (Clint Eastwood)

HGwiki is your friend wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/Category:Zones (yes I'm biased as I added a load of low level stuff), HG is a party module so playing solo especially in higher Epic areas can be hard depending on the builds you are using. As for the Zhents going there solo and taking on Angus is pretty much guaranteed suicide unless you are a PM (or other class with total critical hit immunity) as he has actual devastating critical and about 6 heal potions, however he is not immune to instant death effects (he will drink a shadow shield potion if you don't kill him fairly quickly) although he has saves normally associated with a level 60'ish character. My most amusing win was when I used a shop bought scroll to summon a creature (I'd run out of just about everything else), got the low level water elemental that killed him with is first on attack drown effect (the one that removes most of its hit points) when he rolled a 1, boy did that make me laugh

I, personally, don't see a lot of difference between running solo, and running a "self party". Technically, they may be separate toons, but there is still only one player. The "obstacles" to running solo are "manufactured" to require certain builds to defeat them (casters). Having "helper toons" is just a "faux party". You're still playing with yourself.
Back in the day, there were parties going every night. Plenty of chances to get your tags and make LL runs. It happened naturally. I've been on a couple parties since being back. I don't try to avoid parties. But there is a reason most of my toons are at lvl 40 - sitting and waiting for tags. Almost everything LL pretty much requires a party, and a good one at that. Oh, I know, y'all can take your multi-demi toons and solo some areas. But even when I was younger I fond it hard to set aside the 2-3 hours it took to do LL runs. As I noob, I never knew what was going on, often made mistakes that cost lives, and struggled to keep up with the rapid pace. I doubt it has gotten any better with age - lol. I never was an "End Game" kinda guy. I like trying new builds - and I like the "Lower 40".
I even have a few HC toons - that all solo. I LIKE playing on HG. I even like parties. Perhaps I'll just figure out a routine that bypasses/ignores the tags that prevent soloing - thereby scuttling the toon for any LL use.
I summary, it's all about allowing the player to find his/her preferred play style. I'm sure I'll keep my LL toons - and play them when I get a chance. But I'm not sure I'll be making any more. I've already got 14 lvl 40 toons lined up for LL. BUT, I expect I'll be making more "Lower 40" toons.
I appreciate all the help. I've not had ANY problems since I've been back. Everyone has been friendly and helpful. It is a good place to spend my free time and enjoy the fantasy for a while. Even working to get one of my grandsons online -[HBros]Sis oldest son. She used to play here before she passed. I want to share it with him as well.
