We have a winner!! Shining Force 2. I don't know what made me go look for this game again, I used to play it on the SEGA. Gotta love emulation, its the perfect game to kill time at work, I can walk away at any time cause its turn based.
I fired up Chrono Trigger the other day too (never played it) but didn't like the combat nearly as much as this. This is just like fantasy chess.

My ranger/any in the gates of kryta mission. Funny how the best armor protects the least amount of polygons.

Take it from someone who ended up returning to a text MUD over and over between other games (EQ DAoC NWN) over a time span of 10+ years... don't say you're done until the game doesn't exist anymore. Small games like this, where the max players online at a time are 200 or less, is where your heart ends up. After all the fancy graphics, countless bugs and quirks, there's nothing better than returning to a familiar game with a very tight community.
