The DM team was trying to decide today if we should turn Item Level Restriction on or off on the new Higher Ground. Since powerful items will not be obtainable through stores, and players will have to fight monsters and check random loot for rare/magical/set/unique item, we were wondering if we should let players use the best items they find. Of course there is the chance for abuse with this (people just handing out high powered items to newbies), but it could be a good idea. It could also be a bad idea, as said before with the newbie issue. You decide!

I would turn it on only because, as a powergamer, I would find a way to abuse the hell out of it. But that's just me . Oh.......and it's Higan too.

i like the "idea" of no item restrition, but perhaps you could put some on the more powerfull items. that way even if a low lvl char was given the item he/she couldnt use it, but would be able to buy some equipment. that being said 1st time someone starts walking around with a 1st lvl paladin and a holy avenger +5 they should be sent to hell for a bit. in all i think its a good idea and any of your core players would probably be able to honor the idea of no restriction, but there are many out there who dont. that being said i guess i've just convinved myself to vote yes on proposition leave item restriction on

yes leave it on. its not just Higan who will use the chance for supreme equipment on a lvl1 guy, it will be everyone. I dont expect to here anyone say "I can't beat this place, because I dont want to equip good items". Giving items to your weaker characters isnt abuse, since your not bending the rules.
oh, and BTW. a lvl 1 paladin CAN walk around with a +5 holy avenger, since all that is required is the 'Holy Avenger' buff from a lvl14+ paladin. Holy Avenger gives the following properties all at the level requirement of 12 for those that dont know - +5 enchantment bonus for paladins (+2 to others) - 1d6 divine damage to evil (paladin only) - cast 'Dispel on hit' ignores saves (paladin only) - 16 spell resit (paladin only)

how about we put item restrictions on anything with a +3 or greater enchantment ( means everyone can use up to +2 ) and any items granting DR, immunities, or powerful spell-like abilities, and even elemental damage on weapons. make all simple +2 or lower equivalent items usable by all, the restrict the rest. However, i think lvl restrict only, unless obviously only for a specific class ( like wands etc ). The idea a fighter cant pick up ANY weapon and use it is just not in true D&D form ( unless he hasn't got exotic prof and it's a bastard sword etc ).

what's wrong with a lvl-1 guy in sweet equip? Perhaps my character's previous profession was a ritch merchant and he simply bought the best stuff he could find before he started adventuring? All joking aside, I'd probably say leave it on, or else a lot of "ritch merchants" will pop up and make most of the lvl'ing process boring as hell b/c of a complete lack of challenge.
