Oh hmm, I assumed it'd be unequipped. Don't all area transitions automatically check your items for illegal usage? Still, isn't that an exploit?

You can relog in large form with large weapon and shield equipped *then* shift back to your normal size (whatever it was) whilst still holding shield and weapon. Here's my retired Barb, "Bort"; Holding dire mace and shield whilst shapestrong, holding dire mace and shield while medium sized (far right) and holding scythe and shield whilst medium sized (middle) having swapped weapons without going shapestrong again first. So that bit I quoted about means in terms of how the engine treats your character size, not your appearance.

Something to add to this coversation - Damage resistance.
if a your weapon did 15 points of X damage and the monstre has 10/- resistance to X the scimitar crit would deliver 45 of X, (35 get through), the scythe would deliver 75X, (65 get through).
As your base damage of X gets bigger (increased str, etc.) scythe pulls way ahaed of scimitar in overcoming resistances (includes elemental and exotic damages as well as base physical damage). So yes, even if scythe physical dmg is reduced for a greater number of creatures you have 5 or 6 other damage types to consider.

Have a strength build bard with scimitar and going against strength build types with scythe I can tell you that they do more damage when their criticals land, and they do land often, but if it was a DPS content it would be close.. I crit 2-3 times per round for anywhere from 45 - 126 with my scythe.
So if I critted 3x in one round at max of 120 thats 360 + the average 30-80 points in non critical attacks.
Next to Scythe they may crit for 300-400 pts and then miss 3 times.
Honestly, in the end, I think it's playing style.

back in old school poa, scythe came into play esp against the drow, sit there tanking for the mages, and your crits land to finish them off, using a greatsword or scim was nice landing more often, but it only made them heal faster cuz you couldn't finish them off

Just a note on that comment on damage resistance...
difference in crits only plays a roll if the damage soak is bigger than the base damage, where only crits get past it. At higher levels I don't think that's a big worry, I may be wrong but mobs seem to either be all or nothing, or percentage soak, with few if any having a set soak high enough that only crit damage gets past.
