Wraith Assassin: 30 AS / 7 WM / 3 RO The Devcrit Master
"Wraith" (secret subrace) - no race requirement (changes Appearance)
STR - 3, DEX +3, INT +1, +6 hide, +6 move silently, free feat: Aura of Courage, free feat: Immunity to Sleep, free feat: Perfect Health, Immunity: Death Magic
You'll also need to base this on the Human template or you won't get the feats quickly enough to have WM at level 13.
Obviously you need Wraith for this one to be able to access assassin at level 2 and then you take Rapier (or another 18-20 critical chance weapon) as your weapon of choice which gives you a final critical chance of 10-20 with a keen weapon.
Level progression
1 Rogue, 2-11 Assassin, 12 Rogue, 13-18 Weapon Master, 19 Rogue, 20 Weapon Master, 21-40 Assassin
You'll need to start taking the feats to get weapon master straight away or you won't get them early enough to have the required seven levels of WM and thirty of assassin for dev crit.
Ability Points
16 STR (10 Points) (decreases to 13 when Wraith addition occurs) do this to get access to the Cleave Feat
10 CON (2 points) Could add to this if you don’t want Cleave Feat and can live with lower strength
17 DEX (13 Points) (increases to 20 when Wraith addition occurs) Your primary stat so buff it to the max
13 INT (5 Points) (increases to 14 when Wraith addition occurs) to give +2 skill points per level
8 WIS (0 Points)
8 CHA (0 Points)
Other feats required –
Weapon Finesse – To get max AB as you’re not using STR for this
Improved critical - (for weapon of choice)
Weapon Focus - (for weapon of choice) (access to WM class)
Dodge - (access to WM class)
Mobility - (access to WM class)
Spring Attack - (access to WM class)
Whirlwind Attack - (access to WM class)
Expertise - (access to WM class)
Other useful feats –
Cleave – Gives you free attacks, never a bad thing and even more useful when you have Dev Crit
Toughness - (as you won’t be buffing Con that much from the start)
Shield Proficiency - (to give you a big AC boost)
Armor Skin - (who doesn't want +2 AC?)
Blind Fighting - (it's dark out there)
Evasion - Free feat for Rogue level 2 (I believe this is one of the most important features of this build as I've regularly played alongside a FTR/WM/ASSASSIN and have lost count of the number of times he got mashed and I walked away unhurt due to this feat)
Great Dex X - Should be able to manage this by level 60 giving you +5 ab and ac on top of your stat point additions
Skills
Open Lock full skill points as you have rogue levels lets you open just about anything, add two-three items (one easy for an immo to find the other two more tricky) and you will be able to open anything (currently on the server) with the use of +12 lockpicks.
Disable Trap full skill points without this open lock is pointless
Search full skill points useful for finding things.
Tumble full skill points for max AC potential.
Pick Pocket about 15 points as you Dex bonus will take you up to 30 by the time you need to be able to remove stuff from mobs.
Discipline full skill points at lvl20 (WM) to minimise pesky disarm attempts, you can add more points after level 41 but you're never going to have an impressive quantity in this skill.
Use magic Device full skill points as it's nice to be able to use other peoples stuff.
Would be nice to have full Lore to ID stuff you've found but I can live with waiting until I get to the Wyrm to find out what I've got.
Spellcraft as much as you can afford as every 5 points give you a +1 to saves vs spells.
At level 44 I’ve managed to get an un-buffed AC of 115 using a couple of Immortal items and other relatively standard stuff.
One question I have, is there any better armor than second skin that lets you have a full dexterity modifier (I mean with a greater than +10 armor bonus)? Edit: Final ac of 132 with uber gear (just shows you how much I moved on from my initial stuff!).
Something I've noticed whilst playing Ghostly up to level 60 and I can't state this strongly enough, get an IMPLOSION IMMUNITY item, if you have one of these the Desert (and Ssithraks to a much lesser extent) become significantly less painful. I can guarantee you'll be getting a good close view of the sand if you don't have one of these.
From experience the perfect partner for this build is a quality bard as the curse song lowers the saves vs dev crit.
I've noted a few basics below just in case anybody fancies trying another option for this build and while I'll admit you can do this I feel the negatives are in most cases too great. Feel welcome to prove me wrong.
Dev Crit chance
Keen’ed Rapier with improved critical and 7 WM levels 10-20 = 0.55*0.55 = 30.25%
Keen’ed Rapier with improved critical 12-20 = 0.45*0.45 = 20.25%
So if you build an assassin without seven WM levels in this case you’re throwing away 10% chance of making them save vs your dev crit. Obviously if you choose a weapon without 18-20 critical at the outset you might as well forget about killing things with your dev crit and that’s the whole point of a HG assassin isn’t it?
The only other option for this is the Kukri but to enable use of this and 7 WM levels you're going to have to start off as a Ftr (to get exotic weapon proficency), you'll get a better bab but your open locks and remove traps are nerfed by your lack of rogue levels and as mentioned before no evasion.
Dev Crit dc (vs fortitude save)
Level 40 Base 30 Dex = 20 +16 (from Dex boosted to 42) = 36
Level 60 Base 40 Dex = 20 +21 (from Dex boosted to 52) +8 LL bonus = 49
Level 60 Base 50 Dex = 20 +26 (from Dex boosted to 62) +8 LL bonus = 54
As you can see from this Great Dex X must be considered a necessity (and it doesn’t hurt your ab and ac either), you will probably also be able to get another +1 dc boost when the Dex artifact becomes available.
If you're interested in doing a similar build catch me when I'm on with Ghostly Gald (or another of my toons) and I can talk you through the pros and cons if I'm not too busy questing.
