A shifter can, and should, pt2 like a normal tank, so can assist without problems.
You can, and should, restore yourself drinking (lesser) restore potions.
Melee shifters have good stats overall but they simply pale in comparison to 'caster' ones.

I'd prefer the idea of a shifty shifter?.. if you get what i mean, since i have an immortal Half-Guardinal Shifter Tank thats con based which is looking very solid.

Melee shifters have good stats overall but they simply pale in comparison to 'caster' ones. This is spot on. Unless you have a desperate need for an HC tank or just like bashing on things, ability mage is the right option for shifters. In the Hells, the only thing they do not have an answer for are fumes.

Side note: A significant downside to shifter tank w/ HC is the inability to use items while shifted. Usually the tanks need to do the pickup/assists and this is much more difficult and dangerous as a shifter. Agreed. My shifter tank uses humanoid form for that very reason (that and the weapon buffs/extra attack). Those forms can rez, p/u teammates, and use restore pearls. In stronger parties/easier runs, I use other forms, but if I'm relied upon to "tank", then it's almost exclusively with humanoid forms.
