Well, someone was kind enough to toss me a pharlan book for when I get my druid to level 60, so I can build a HUGE damage tank that I wanted to build from the start. Let me know what you think, this is what I came up with:
There has been some changes to smiters, see: wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/Greater_Smite To max AB to AB= 100, only Paladin, Blackguard, or Champion of Torm count. The char modifier increases the damage. Maybe go all into charisma with Rapier Wit ?
(btw, I'm not playing smiters myself, maybe my hints are rubbish...)
My smiting paladin also has 4 non-smiter levels, i.e. the AB on it is 96. This isn't a problem at all, although I guess there are mobs - especially some superior and elites in Abyss - against which I'll have problems with 4 less AB than the maximum.
Depending on where you want to go with that build I'd strongly recommend taking 20-30 ranks in concentration.
I ditched AC because with tumble and armor skin it will reach 112 ac max, which isn't enough anyways, so it will have low 90s or so, but plan on using fallens setup and he says it has a low 60 ac and it does well. Went for 32 base cha as it will increase my damage and cap me at +20 physical boost at double demi and 14s.
I plan on using the constitution artifact for the poison immunity and fire vulnerability for the PoM two-bladed sword mega damage fire weapon. I read a lot on this and wish I could use the book now, but I can't
This build is very very close to so called "Champion of Sheinja" that 6-7 Sheinjas used to run, but that was back when div might + wrath stacked and you got +2 attacks for double weps and most of all, div might/wrath were irresistable damage. Anyways, it is quite solid build - with listen you can drop blindfight, also iron will seems pretty random feat. Brutal throw and power critical propably the two feats I'd take instead of those.
For what little it's worth--agreed with both Fallen and Vichya here.
I'm not knowledgeable about endgame runs and I'm sure Conc comes into play in more places but I can tell you that without the 20-30 points Vichya recommended you will really hate Dulv.
Melee tanks should always have a ranged weapon at the ready for many different situations that can arise, and Brutal Throw on a Str tank will definitely help. Would definitely be much more useful to you than the two feats Fallen pointed out. I've heard that Brutal Throw is very useful in Abyss in particular, and if you plan to take this toon there I'm sure you wouldn't regret having it.
No need to elaborate any further on Fallen's comments but Power Crit seems like a no-brainer with "spare" feats on a build like this.
Also, what weapon would you go with for overall best damage in all areas? Plan on taking this to Hells, Abyss, Elysium (tag for div armor), possibly Aboleths and other end-game areas. What do you think?
Two-Bladed Sword (preference for looks, con arti fire vuln and pom mega-fire dmg) Dire Mace (bludgeoning damage, read its the best for hells, but doubt for all areas) Double-Axe (Another slashing version, looks like its getting an upgrade on wep update) Double Scimitar (Another slashing, 18-20/x2 instead of 19-20/x3 for more crits)
Main concentration check in hell is vs paragon Nupperibos, failed check leaves you disarmed which can really suck.
I would say Dire Mace is the best double weapon for hell...the slash vulnerable mobs vs bludgeoning vulnerable mobs is fairly close but there are soooo many Pit Fiends (90+ on Nessus alone iirc). Double Scimitar's crit range makes it really nice for non hell runs where you can actually crit non trash mobs and on hell runs where it's mostly trash--Tia-Min.
The mega damage Two Bladed Sword-(Fire) and Dire Mace-(Cold) are both nice for certain mobs but both suffer from having Negative as their other damage...making the TBS worthless on one Abyss run as all the fire vulnerable undead heal from negative. and the cold vulnerable Pit Fiends don't take Negative....snif...
Dulv has the DC 40 conc check vs insta death on the Voidwraiths, which makes tanking Extremely hard if you don't have much conc (note that death magic imm won't save you from failing the skill check). Not sure if you are interested much in Dulv though as it's not extremely popular (compared to hells) save for small farming groups.
The conc check in hells should be the para nupperibos , I don't think lemures do it (though lemure/(non-para) nup have same appearance ?)

KE meant paragorn nubberibos that disarms in hells for concentration check, not lemures which dazes, but CoT is daze imm and it is constitution check over concentration.
Concentration check is also in aboleths (mainly first 2 maps) where you can get disarmed without it. In Elysium concentration vs getting dominated. Some concentration checks in abyss too, but those not a proplem to non spell caster.
Personaly I'd go with diremace since Hells should be your main target run location for quite some time. Abyss how ever is very hard to make clear recommendations. To my knowledge slashing is better overall vs bosses, but blud is awesome vs mariliths, which is #1 str tank target.
Okay so it seems like most are choosing Two-Bladed Sword or Dire Mace. Seems like most like dire mace, but I like the look of two bladed sword to be honest Is it a HUGE difference in hells and on mariliths, via slash vs bludg?
Can't tell you for sure about Maris, other than my most recent experiences with a toon wielding bsword, which is quite ineffective physical damage. This is even with Whetstone of 58 fighter levels.
For many Hells mobs--or if not many than at least the ones that would be your priority targets--I would say yes it will be a huge difference, but you could easily check out the numbers and decide for yourself. Either Hells arena, KV, or download Vichya's HGX and you can check out what you'd be dealing with.
From what I remember Cornugon actually takes slash much better than bludg, and there are likely several others where this is the case. However overall, there is a reason people recommend bludg over slash for Hells. For example PF has immunity/resist to bludg only 20/5 while 60/15 to slash. That is huge.
It's all personal preference ultimately and I say play what you want, but I think you may end up thinking that dire mace looks a lot cooler after you see how much better it is at smashing PFs
