I'm getting a strange error message when I bid on the Robes of the Dim Mak Master on server 111.
Whatever I bid is increased by 1, and then I get a message saying I do not have the highest bid.
For example, the price was 2,000,001 and I bid 225,000,000 and got this messsage: Your max bid of 225000000 on 225000001 - Battle Axe Wielder's Robes of the Dim Mak Master is lower than the highest maximum bid! The current bid has been raised to 225000001, but is not held by you.
I tried it several times and relogged with the same error. I didn't try bidding on anything else on this server but did not see the error on 211.
The market list online reflects the new bid (i.e. [mybid]+1) and no funds were placed in escrow.

Sounds like someone's previous max bid outbid you . Welcome to my world I haven't used the auction chests in a long time to be honest, is "max bid" something new? The last time I used them, you could see the highest previous bid and then bid higher than that. Or am I not reading you right?

You bid the maximum price you are willing to bid on an item, and if nobody else's bid is higher than yours, you're guaranteed to win the item. The maximum bid is unkown to everyone but the bidder to prevent ninja bidding. Someone is just willing to spend more money ("a maximum bid") higher than you're bidding on it, which is why they continue to hold the highest bid (your amount +1).

Maybe I'll just trade for one then

That'd be fine. Then you'll stop bumping up the amount I have to pay!

That'd be fine. Then you'll stop bumping up the amount I have to pay! OK, now you lost me....if you bid a certain amount, isn't that the amount you have to pay? It's been changed to ebay style bidding. You put in the maximum price you are willing to pay, but you only have to pay 1 gp over the last bid maximum or reserve price. Here is an example: - Player A puts item up for auction, setting reserve price of 10 gp (to make it simple).
- Player B bids the maximum price they are willing to pay, which is 60100100. The bid is now 11 gp, and Player B will win it for 11 gp unless someone else comes along and bids.
- Player C bids 40100100. This is less than the maximum set by Player B, so B will still win it, but the bid increases to 40100101, which is the new price that Player B will have to pay.
- Player C bids again, this time 50100100. They still are lower than Player B's maximum, but the bid now increases to 50100101. Frustrated, they give up and go kill Dachy or something.
- Player D comes along and bids on the item, this time bidding 80100100. This is higher than Player B's maximum, so Player D is now the highest bidder at 60100101.
