Have to think this over, but a trip to the wiki would do you wonders. Look up URs, wizard gear etc. Well randomized URs can often be better than BURs so you would want those. Some suggestion straight off the top of my head- Axeria wiz gear (dachy), Axreian Battlecaster gear (Rona), mantle of hadean power (pom), staff of heradis, darkened moon (dulv), ixitials ruin, lamentation's call....there are soooo many. Here is a good place to look: wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/Items

At 40, with no tags, I'd use: - UR wiz staff
- UR wiz belt or Xitachyl's Ruin +10
- UR wiz shields Aasgart's Assault, Teldar's Travail, (not sure if there are items with Shield prof usable at L40) or torch
- Any set of bracers that give +14 or better Armor AC, for example Arm of the Cinderscale (trade for these if you don't have a character who can go to Phlegethos)
- Any UR or mord/breach rings, depending on area
- Any UR or set helmet, to cover immunities / abilities
- Any UR or set cloak, to cover immunities / abilities
- Any UR or set boots with +16 or better dodge AC, to cover immunities / abilities
- Any UR or set amulet, to cover immunities / abilities
- Swap robes around to fill gaps in abilities or immunities as needed.
At 50, with some LL tags, I'd use pretty much the same things, except: At level 55, get Tia tagged ASAP and start looking for Tia gear. Then once you get to Dis, switch to one of the Dis wiz shields. I like Teardrop. Dachy gear bites.

I found that both my sorcerer and wizard got geared for slots on robe, staff, belt, and amulet. Rest of the items were chosen for immunes and stat boosts; meaning I could max out cons, dex, wisdom. Robe for Wizard is easy, the secret robe is very easy to get and is reasonably handy all the way to 60 (and it's lvl35).
I didn't get upgraded until I hit lvl55, and at that point the main changes I made were the Thid bracers (+18 AC with a ton of slots). Thid bracers are also a guaranteed drop so should be very cheap and easy to get.

I know this is mildly OT, but there is a sorc robe as well, located in drow country. Ask about it in game if you need one.

For wiz I really wouldn't splash .. I dunno it seems silly. You get plenty feats as-is, and it only really reduces your SR cutting power. If you really do want to splash, might be worth going 1monk and taking some tumble for free, and having some wisdom AC to boot. start looking for Tia gear. Haha, yeah good luck with this task... getting a chance at Tia kit takes four full runs (desert, db, thid, tia), then winning the roll good luck if you're not in top 2 (over 20 tia runs in last few weeks alone rolled position 4+). Buying the kit isn't likely either.

If you splash at all, I would rogue splash. if you want AC, there is UR-Ward, and other caster shields.

Well a ranger splash grants another Spell focus feat, but i don't think it is worth for a wizard against a Rogue or Monk splash, for an arcane theurge tough, this might be interesting. As far as summoners are concearned, a stronger one would be Cleric with Plant and War domains, and, of course, conjuration spell focus.

Ranger splash also gives shield proficiency. Useful if you want to use a Dis shield without an additional Shield Proficiency item, and don't have a pandect.
(LF Shield Prof Pandect, btw)
