Please forgive me if these are obvious questions and there is already an awesome build for mercurial greatsword.
Is this a viable weapon choice for builds that wish to see the hells?
What class might wield a mercurial greatsword and offset the disadvantage of no shield?
What subrace?
So you need a class that is able to offset some of the disadvantage to not being able to have a shield and you also need a large size race.
To take advantage of the only reason I see to swing such a beastly weapon we are also talking about having a high STR score.
I am stumped. Cloud giant CoT?

The problem with 2H weapons is you typically need STR exceptions being Quarterstaff WIS Monk and Small Size Rapier Wit CHA Pally/BG. This leaves a large gap in AC as shields on HG grant roughly 15 AC and you will often lack the DEX or other sources of AC to make up for this. The only options left for AC are concealment, resistance/soak, reduction, and immunities. The only two classes which could feasibly have enough of any of those are Champion of Torm and Shadow Dancer and neither has very many subrace options that are large sized and can wield a Merc Greatsword.
A Half-Cloud Giant CoT is likely one of the most viable options at this time. I don't think CoT has any other option atm and I would have to go through the list for viable SD options and that one is still just a theory as the concealment percentage may still be too low to be viable with out solid backup AC.

Well.... BK can attain similar soak of a CoT. Premonition with LSF Divination at CL 60 grants 50/16+. The only viable Subrace for a Large BK is Half-Cloud Giant.
But, like Yojimbo said, AC is a major issue, hence building like this isn't exactly viable. In Hells, without constant greater restoration, you suffer a layer penalty to immunity, making the soak/immunity strategy work poorly.
Another idea would be building a batte cleric. Gate, energy buffer and energy immunity can provide good resistances/immunities (just make sure to grab Divination, Abjuration). Prayer and battletide can be used to debuff enemies AB, if you have spell penetration. You can also use restoration on yourself to recover immunities. The subrace for such a Cleric would be either Wemic or Maelphant.
All in all, the damage that the mercurial sword grants isn't much better than a scythe or halberd instead (as these weapons do two damage types making the superior bypassing resistances and can be wielded with a shield depending on your size).

afaik xdd's are large size, get an ac bonus, and 20 free points of str. A true unitank xdd might fit the bill. Just off the top of my head- subrace sal, start str 12, start dex 18...all points into dex with dex arty and 2 great str's end up with 60 dex and 60 str at demi x2 with gear. Maybe worth playing with.

With their BAB ~ 60 STR you will have a lower total AB than many other tanks I would have to look at numbers but I think that one won't have enough AB to be a viable offensively though defensive number might be viable on it though.

Actually xDD Str costs 10 feats, and they get 4 extra AC, but they can't splash monk without losing at least one attack (as they require sorcerer or bard as well) so their ac will still suffer. (they also lose 1 AB and AC due size)
Another option is an Uni rogue (69% conceal with 5 feats, +4 dex at LL and skill points for CA/tumble) with at least 1 level of monk splash and either fighter (for weapon specialization) or BG/Paladin (saving throws bonuses). Subrace: Zenytri or Undying Wemic
Well, you could try Fighter as well, using an Uni build with Monk and Weapon master splash. If you maximize CA, Tumble, Parry and Hide, you can achieve some conceal using camouflage spell from items.

Maybe worth playing with. Saw a pretty good player try this out in hells and quit at Tia or Dis. Had like 120 AC as I remember, got ripped apart constantly. I agree COT is the route, only problem with soaker tanks is they require massive amounts of very nice gear to pull it off, and are pretty crappy anyplace with inflicts. Don't forget hells pens drop immunities a lot.

Well a good avenue is to build a Barbarian if u chose a medium size subrace when u will use ur Shapestorng Rage u will be able to use ur merc greatsword in one hand and a shield in the other hand Shapestrong Rage - At Barbarian 30 and total character level 35, characters can acquire the ability to enter Shapestrong Rage, which will allow them to change size at will. - Medium characters will become Large when using their Shapestrong ability. All other characters will become Medium when using it. - Using the Shapestrong ability again will return a character to their normal size, as will logging out and back in.

Mercurial isn't a large weapon, it's huge. Only Large characters can wield it using two hands. Tough a barbarian might be able to wield it and change to medium size netting +1 AC/AB over large size, or use a better subrace.

I ditched AC as it wont help us any without a shield we will always get hit so rely on soak and decent gear to get our phys% above 80-100%.
