When the Gnomish Inventor was implemented I was looking at that quasi and thought it would be quite fun to play one. So I sketched a build using tiefling, going 16 rogue and 24 wizard for all those wiz goodies. But even with a starting dex of 18+2, great dex 10 and all the free weapon feats you get by going wiz cc, would've left the character with less than 90 ab. Since I didn't know a way around that I just packed the build away and concentrated on other stuff (there were a lot of new things on that update).
So with that thread in the Drunken Monk about GIs needing some love, I was looking at my build again and tried to fit in more ab at the cost of wizard levels. Since I'm playing -HC- exclusively the ability to see limbo walls would not be that interesting anyway so I opted for a build mostly focussing on using the heavy crossbow with more rogue levels to get a better LBAB and extra dex during LLs.
Now what I've actually wanted is a char that can cast Know Vulnerabilities, because my logger shows ? a bit too often for my likings. The ability to cast lvl 9 arcane spells is welcome as well as my staffmaster can't make bbod or mord scrolls to supply my other toons. I already have a 50+ rogue, so I didn't focus on rogue abilities too much. Having 63 ranks in all of them will get me very far in -HC-; by the time I'd need those 2 or 3 points of search or disable trap from skill focus feats I might have found an item with it already.
Here's what I've come up with:
Gnome - Tiefling
rogue/wizard (20/20), pre-epic: (14/6), starting with rog to get it as my CC
Str: 6
Dex: 18+2
Con: 14
Int 16+2
Wis: 8
Cha: 8
Pre-epic feats:
Strong Soul
Wf: Heavy Crossbow
Point Blank Shot
Rapid Reload
Sf: Concentration
Sf: Craft Armor
Sf: Craft Weapon
Bonus pre-epic feats:
Sf: Illusion (gnome)
Imp. Evasion (rog)
Def. Roll (rog)
Sf: Ench (wiz)
Epic feats:
Armor Skin
Epic Prowess
Ewf: H. Crossbow
Gr. Dex I-IV
Epic bonus feats:
Sf: Ench (wiz)
Gr. Int I (wiz)
Extend Spell (wiz)
Blinding Speed (rog)
Epic Dodge (rog)
Gr. Int I lets me cast lvl 9 spells, especially for bbod and mord scrolls. Extend spell is probably for C&C, which has a rather short duration otherwise and is used for my gadgets on the helm. Extended tenser's will also add an extra attack for this toon, as it has less than 16 pre-epic bab. Not to confuse with the extra attacks at CL45 and 55 which this toon (and no other GI build) doesn't get. Blinding speed was chosen due to the lack other other interesting rogue bonus feats.
Legendary feats:
Lwf: H. Crossbow
Leg. Hardened Soul
Epic Fort
Gr. Dex V-VIII
According to the wiki, your handbombs will get 6 sp for each sp feat you've got, so the sp tome would make handbombs cast with 78 sp; which is most likely enough since I can also lower sr by 10 with one of the emitters.
AB should hit 94-95 within point blank range, depending on craft weapon with 7 attacks per round as long as tenser's lasts. Saves would be 60 fort, 73 reflex and 55 will (and uro robes with epic will are quite nice for any dexer).
I haven't messed with skills right now because you'll miss a lot of points until LLs (gnome and rogue extra), but a rough calculation leads to the result that I'll have enough to max:
discipline (crossclassed)
tumble
parry
listen
craft armor
craft weapon
hide
open lock
disable traps
search
pick pocket
lore
some concentration
(umd isn't really needed because of the wiz levels that let you use scrolls; it might be nice for the crit imm ring coupled with the kd immunity from the mech suit, would make you a rather stable tank in a couple of situation...a shield would probably bee needed though)
I'll get Gwf, improved, overwhelming and devastating critical from my gloves and feat level immunity to KD from my suit (which atm gives +GI level /5 to all abilities, not just str, dex and con). Now I hope that the extra phys damage GIs get will get integrated and not as a separate package, so that dev crit should be quite nice against targets with low pierce resists.
I'll be a bit limited with canister choice due to the low amount of wiz levels (and not enough rogue levels for the fetchers), but the slow effect doesn't seem to have a save, so that's a nice one to use if you've got a bard (the other one which lowers ac doesn't stack with bard song).
I'd appreciate any comments and I'd also be very glad if someone with a GI in his vault could answer me the following question, as I can't equip helmets in the [test] chamber:
- Is the Know Vulnerability Spell a GI's helmet can cast of any use? Is it cast at the GI's level and uses his lore score to determine dc? What about spell pen?
