i find this weird, an 17 yr old got arrested for an offensive tweet..... really? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-19059127i mean i get why the athlete would be so angry and the kid shouldn't have said such harsh things, but why is this an arrestable offense when there is so much trash talk on the net has it always been this way and i just didn't know? or are people just over reacting because of the Olympics

Arresting him may be very harsh (does seem weird though), no doubt it will be dropped. However, a good way to rap him over the knuckles for a thoughtless, stupid and exceedingly hurtful comment to someone only doing their very best. Count to 10, then talk (I need to take my own advice, lol) Yes he did apologize afterwards, but that does not take away how Daley must have felt getting that tweet.

Tweeting is the intersection of impulse + reach + feeling of anonymity of online. With an almost permanent record.
There will be a lot more idiots like this.

Apparently it is an arrestable offence with a potential six month prison sentence if found guilty www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/27/section/1 Freedom of speech in the UK is long gone! You can only say things if it doesn't upset anybody and lets be realistic there's always somebody who's going to be upset by a negative comment. I have to say I feel people should just stick to the subject in question (in this case the quality of the performance) rather than making spurious references to irrelevant things.

Proving, once again, that having the ability to transmit your thoughts and feelings to the world as soon as you have them isn't necessarily a good thing...

Part of the law says "with intent to cause distress or anxiety". Based on the BBC article, I don't think there was any intent there.
Stupidity? Yes.
Actually causing distress? Yes.
But intent to cause distress? I doubt it.
but there may be other tweets that show a pattern of intent.

Freedom of speech is long gone? Um did the UK ever actually have it? Well, freedoms aren't absolute. There can be limitations or even consequences. And all too often, people forget to exercise responsibility with those freedoms. Considering the details of this situation I'll be surprised if he gets jail time. Some other penalty would be more realistic.

Some other penalty would be more realistic. Ding ding ding! If your definition of 'freedom' as it pertains to ANY right, is absolute lack of any limitation, then the US, and in fact NO country, save one in total anarchy, has ever had such 'freedom'. Freedoms can only rationally be conceived of in opposition to OTHER freedoms, something politicians are loathe to discuss, given the non-bumper-sticker nature of that conversation. My freedom to swing my fist ends where your nose begins, as Oliver Wendell Holmes once remarked. Rephrased, he's saying that your freedom to swing your fist is juxtaposed with your freedom not to have someone punch you in the face. Freedoms don't exist in a vacuum. Likewise, in the arena of free expression, even western civilization's most cherished right has NEVER been totally unfettered. You are not, for example, allowed to yell 'FIRE!' in a crowded theater, because the government interest in protecting public safety outweighs the negligible value of the freedom to do so. When you cry tyranny instead of weighing pros and cons, you're abdicating your part in the discussion. Funky
