I like the input we are getting so far: Restos I have you down for Spanish, also do you think you can figure out how to create and post pod casts on line? Hearing real players who are on HG and why they enjoy the mod is a great intro to us. Also these can be expanded into a learning series or guide to HG. Crazy I like the stickied list of recommended builds idea. arek,Yojimbo & Deso I do like the idea of an apples to apple comparison as far as AC/AB/Saves etc at some level 60 or X2 benchmark where a player can intelligently compare builds. @deso, would you be willing and able to help with posting on Portuguese language sites? @runt and Prepared I like the idea of a new player Teamspeak or Skype call so that they can ask and get answers to questions as well as meet new people on HG. Can the lecture part be recorded to be used as a resource for training new players on HG? Can that get posted? 1st call should be an introduction to HG and leveling new toons. 2nd call tagging Pre-ll and questing primer. and so on..... We should try to organized these calls soon, does anyone want to be in charge of this? I like the e-mail blast idea, but in the past the blasts were walls of text which I doubt even the most interested read all the way through. Would one of the Admins be willing to send out something that was a short and fun reminder about our continued existence here on HG island? I am still looking for more people able and willing to post on other forums. And more players to help with the tasks brought up so far. fade that was a very good post as it shares a newer players point of view on how HG currently works etc. Those who are signed up to help please look for PMs on prospecting for Forums to be coming very soon. Thank you for wanting to help keep HG going, Bad

i had read this post last few day.. i have take time to give answer.. First: quote from Bad: b. I personally miss.. seeing Ayla, Darc, Winlock, and Bigcowboy (Dynn) all of whom seem to be playing less at this time. But more importantly new players are missing out on the warm welcome and amazing help that these players all selflessly provided (I feel their hard work was a key factor in our player retention). quote end from Bad.. ------- your right those players take time and choices to help newbie that's mean A) sacrifice time to help without regards .. personnal goal and (loot run) B) patience for explication to help newbies like me since January,, C) teach to newbies same mentality self-sacrifing time to help others.. mean new players.. you know why this awesome server in going slowly down...? NO 1 there.. to replace them except maybe , few but... No worrie Yojim talking about you no 1 there to replace them.. Exemple: 12/10/2012 Cania run called..server 212. I'm going there prompt.. My higher toon need it!! i got no demi .. I see there few player who got 2-3-4 maybe more.. demi!!! But sad for me i got an arcane toon... they are 3!! already. Dissapoint cuz waiting this run since 3 weeks.. i have left.. If you understand my feeling: quite HG give all stuff and bye!! My impression all old players prefer play together than trust a newbie in case he do mistake and all was be wipe! maybe just an impression but... I'm not here to critic.. just here to help all about this reflexion... you play to meet friends and have fun or here,, for personnal goal loot, maximize toon,or to be the most rich??? Personnaly i had tail 3 friends here trying to promote HG ,,, i love this server but,, my friend Ayla is not there since alot... cuz sick* he promote and convince me to come here.. i do the same... i was trying to help , play to my best(i'm not the best player), i was trying to tail few friends here 2 of them haves buy the games again after they put it in garbage. Now my question.. why i was waiting again..run i need when ppl here with many toon prefer play with other old player than me?.like a parriah... Maybe cuz i'm french Canadian i hope not... I'm not fairplay,,or honest? i hope not too.. or tell me.. i had not donate no i have make donation... Tips for all... Take time to help your newbie.. This post is pertinent!!! 200 player mean maybe 175 donations monthly. . Not sure your server will stay open with 40 players geek and 30 donation monthly! the owner is not stupid.. maybe he love the game but no one maintain a server only with his own cash! for the fun of the others.. My first post here.. sorry for some bad expression,,, i'm frenchy Canadian i do my best to post in English! I dont wanna hurt anyone just a reflexion here you know.. regards Jujure!

i took few minutes to read what was post here, i see many nice ideas
For my part here my thinking, before to start on HG i was on LOC where i found few players who was nice and patient with me because my bad english but this happen i had a bad experience with a DM there who treat me realy bad because my bad english, then i left LOC and found HG, there was a wow, i was welcome even if my english was bad, and found players who took time and repeat and repeat to me just to the time i understand what they would say to me ( usualy using another words for this lol ), my feeling gone quick to see HG players like if they was a second family for me, and this was the major point to keep me on HG because i appreciate those pples so much i was fool to go somewhere else.
If i take time to say this it's because i always see HG like a second family , yes this happen we can have argument with another player, but this happen in family but this always can be fix and then all thing go back on the right way. We need to make things to give a warm welcome to newbies, keep in mind a lot of them when they make them first step they know no one of us they dont know what will come for them because all pples had bad experience somewhere before and some can be worry because of this.
Another thing HG is huge and there is a lot and a lot of things to learn , where to start, what is the next step they have to do, i cannot count how many time i found newbies totaly lost, didnt know wich way to go , for my part i never found a guide where i can have step by step the way just to demi god x5, i mean where all is in a good chronology what mean to redo and redo because u miss a thing there, and later u miss another thing there, some will continue and do proxy, or like me a new toon but not all and some can give up , even if they ask this is realy hard to explain them step by step and all the time u find out they miss something and have to go back.
Most of the player wanna play at high lvls for what , for gold, for power, for gears , or to impress others, but think about this , why pples play games ?? To pass the time , to have fun, to make friends. In my mind if the game go to complex this make some lose of fun, If newbies have to make the first contact this is not so easy some can be shy, some can think them english is not good enough and a lot of other reason, HG for me and a lot of you guys is like a second home and what we do when someone come to our home , we receive them we take time to speak to them to do things to make them feel good and welcome, we dont wait to offer them a cofee, something to eat, then we can we do the same on HG
if enough are up to take charge like in some lvls or runs to take care of newbies to help them tag on them , then i am up too and i realy dont mind to pass 99% of my time just in lowbie area just to the time they enter in hell,s runs ( some of you guys already take the relay from there, but i think not enough as they need to be accept in your partys without to have to search for months for this )
The idea to have pples who are ready to help newbies who dont have english at first language is a nice idea and this can make things a lot more easy and attractive for them when they start on HG. I will try to be more on the game form the next week then i will do my best to meet newbies. But a thing i would like to be done, it's to have somewhere a list of who are new players, may be on the forum in a special section this could be find, i think this can be a great help if newplayers make some presentation of them when they start on HG this could help us to know a little about them and open discustion and relationship can be build from there. For now to know if a players is realy a newbie u have nothing to tell you except if he is register on the forum but a lot dont use the same name as them player name on the game this is very confusing with the amount of players.
DMs and Guide have a lot of things to do but like every one it,s fun if they have time to enjoy the game too, then i think if we have volonteers who are a groupe of players who can speak different language who could be up to help newbies in different language and to have a section on the forum where those volonteers name and classify by them language they can speak can be found easyly by newbies this can make first contact easyer for the newbies as they will know thoses players are up to give them help in the language they prefer
Not sure if i have exprim and explain myself good enough ( surely a lot of mystake in my expression or words ) then if this happened please excuse me

Thomas that is an awesome idea. A newbie designation even. Kind of like -HC- for hardcore. New players could add this to their names and then we could know right away? If that isn't possible a list would be the next best option. Make a whole newbie section on the forums where they are encouraged to post themselves, their toons, their thoughts, questions, etc. and build that up.
Give some players moderator powers to keep it clean and remove double posts, etc. and then implement the build ideas here. Only strong, viable builds can be posted here. Keep your for fun, or experiment ideas out. That way the newbies can come to this area and count on getting the resources they need to be successful.

Quite a while back I had suggested a Newbie designation or even a Newbie Guild that could facilitate runs and tagging at certain times etc. This would allow new players to have a group and make friends quickly. I had also suggested a Mentor type designation for those long time players who had volunteered to work with new players. I had suggested that mentors should receive discounts at the stores and that a donation chest be set up that could only be accessed by mentors to provide gear etc. for new players. I believe that Dev time could not be found for any of that, as then (About 3 years ago) player retention was not of such critical importance. I do think that new players should be encouraged to introduce themselves on the forums and receive advice on builds, help etc. I very much like the idea of a complete guide to HG but this is a huge undertaking as a comprehensive step by step guild would rival "War and Peace" for size and scope. (Any Volunteers?) I am glad to see more of you in game Thomas . Bad

@deso, would you be willing and able to help with posting on Portuguese language sites? I could help, but truth be told, I don't know/visit any portuguese "speaking" site.

i would love to help with newbies who talk in Dutch. My problem is that i see myself still as newbie too as i'm here for about 6 months now. The help I had from Ayla and AuBricker and lots of others let me grow and i even start to find my way around now at non-immo levels It does make a difference if some people help you from the start! Thank you all for that!

Hey bad and the rest of HG. I have myself took time off of HG here and there but I'm back again. I recently had to re-install windows. I would love to help in any way I can. We have a great server and a great community and there is lots of information out there about our server. I feel that one of our major problems isn't getting new people it's keeping them and also keeping existing players. Like Bad stated some of our major players have left the game. Dod, Starlandra to name a few. I think Bads idea of hosting events can help to retain Veteran players. I will admit the game can get steal after a while doing the same old runs every night but we can't expect the devs to come out with something new all the time. For me though the game is still fun and intriguing. Every run brings new challenges, new potential. One day the run might be successful and smooth as chocolate and the next day you might struggle all the way through just to wipe at the boss. You never know what the runs will bring. Personally I think another thing that might help is loot changes or additional loot for existing areas. I know we have the randomization thing but not all randomizations come out good. I think we need more to look forward to on these runs. Once you have an uber duber Pyroclasic flow why would you need another one? Maybe this isn't the answer but I know it sure helps for those people that seem to have it all and have seen it all. Let's say there was an event that for one day and one day only you log on and do your same old run but there are all these new one day only loot possibilities. That would surely entice people that have stopped playing or don't play that often to log in and check it out. Ok, now to tackle the new players. I agree with you Bad. I've seen it way too much and new person logs on and they ask a simple question and someone tells them to post in the Newbie channel. I personally try to give them the answer but if it's something I don't know I will direct them to the newbie channel. I have personally given 200k plus gold to at least 50 new players over my 7 years on HG and given tons of gear away. I've given so much away that I can barely gear my own lowbie toons lol. I think I need to do some lowbie gear farming. Anyways to get back on subject I think you're right we need to first be as friendly as possible to new players, answer their questions when we can and try to help them out with gear, etc whenever possible. I also think we need to start playing lowbie characters more often. Some of our veteran players seem to be beyond running lowbies but I think it's a practice we all need to get back into. I recently seen the same guy every night for like 4 or 5 days shout for an immortal run. We call know how frustrating it can be when you can't get a run formed. I have helped out on lots of immo runs recently for no tag, exp etc. I personally have fun helping lower level players get their tags. I'm so glad they finally let us take our immo away to help these players. I was so frustrated before that. I would always want to help but was never able to because of the immo restriction. I am in audio visual editing class right now so I might possibly be able to help with the videos. I'm not sure though as I'm just learning the program. I might be able to do it but it might not be that great lol. I will at the very least see if I can find a way to post the game on our local Craigslist. I know it's an older game but I have a way with words and I'll try my best to bring warm and fuzzies to all who read it. If you can think of any way I can help I would be glad to do so. Just ask me in game or on skype Mordenkeinen_the_Wise I hope HG stays around for a while. I love playing this game. Heck I'm still stuck at one demi. I just can't bring myself to get others. Some toons I'm not good at and can't get anyone to help me learn. I have a level 60ish sorc that I haven't taken past Dis because I can't get any viable help. My bard is on Min and I wont take him further until I learn to play him better. I want to make sure I know my job before I progress. So for now as everyone on HG knows I basically have one toon, a barbarian that I play all the time lol. I can't help it. It's just so much fun to play.

I know I"m double posting but I have one more thing to add. Another problem has been that the drop rate of books seems to have been lowered again. I personally haven't seen a book drop in at least 10 runs or so. I don't know if this was intentional but it definitely makes it frustrating when you've been around 7 years and only have about half of the books. I also like to give new players books but it's kind of hard to do when I don't have them myself.

As always thank you for the responses so far. jujure Is your first language French? Because we could use help in posting on french boards, please let me know. @ayla, Nice to see you back and as always helping new players Thomas, btw if you need subbies, gold etc for them please send me a pm or tell in game and i will try to help. @deso if you are open to looking for some appropriate forums in Portuguese, I think it would be a help as we have and have had some great players from Brazil. @ lutseke, having played lowbies with you a bit I think that it would be nice if you could work with English or Dutch speaking new players. Your English is quite good. Btw if you are able could you look around for gaming forums in Dutch? There could be some untapped players for us on those boards. @ Mord, great post though a bit of a challenge to read bud. I will put you down to help with English language posts on forums. And I think you would be quite good at helping new players as you have the right temperament to work with newbies and get them off to a good start. Ok we are starting to get close to critical mass and getting this off the ground. Bad

Just wanted to chip in a say this is a fantastic effort. I am happy to lend a hand somehow, be that helping out new players or whatever.
Like alot of our player base I struggle to give committments which require a regular time each week 'cos invariably I find I have to break that committment for some RL issue (sadly I am no spring chicken anymore).
This maybe a personal perception, I'm not sure, but there do not appear to be enough mid level runs being called for non hell LL areas. I started to enjoy HG doing Maze, Locath, POM, Beholders, Pyramid, Mycon et al and these are some great fun runs too which can be done with just about any mix of party, on a number of these runs you can't fugue so they are more relaxed as well.
I will do my best to try and call at least one of these runs a week in Euro timezone rather than just calling Hell runs all the time. If I can I will try and post up the times in advance, on the boards here, but they maybe a bit on the fly for the aforementioned reasons.

Great idea, Kratlin. Such runs are the butter and bread of new players not yet ready for Hell.

(not trying to piss on anyones parade) Have to speak what I see as some hard truths though I haven't played hg in quite awhile. When I was last here this place was a hornets nest requiring either incredibly thick skin or an absolute lack of self-esteem to hang in there to end game areas. The cultural thing- that has to change and in a really big way or ALL ELSE is for naught. Concerning skype etc. you might as well go ahead and just narrow the field of new hg players to those who have skype (or some voip) or the 5% of non-skype people who don't mind being pretty much entirely ignored throughout a run. The elitism was prolific and repugnant when I played HG. Being on runs where mad crap was talked about people in the party who had no idea of what was being said about them. Then the occasional deep run where new/challenged players pop up on the server while the run is forming, "Hey I need that tag, can I join" or "what are you guys up to?? Looks interesting"...then being told by party members to just move along, nothing to be seen here. Deep runs in the early formation stage and people saying "If its gonna be this guy and that guy, I'm not going, its just gonna be a fail boat". The HG media blitz combined with the xp weekends, special events etc.....all as a combined effort was a raging success imo. A ton of new people came on the server and many, maybe most, were leeted out by some supervets who play the game as a kind of sick addiction that they really didn't want to play but felt compelled to. Like the old guys at a job they are really really good at but they hate the job and see any new hire as just some idiot whos foibles they must suffer through as part of the daily toil. Lets see, play a game and have an experience that makes you feel like crap for an hour or two, or do something fun that makes you feel good? It is a simple choice. I hope all of this changes. HG is a great game. I just don't see it changing. Sorry
