I am new to online games, but I own all of the NWN and NWN2 games. I have a slow internet connection, and I am super dumb with computers. Will I get kicked off for my slow connection? I read something about not responding to people and getting booted off. I still don't know how to talk to other players, so thankfully no one has tried to ask me anything yet. I don't want to seem rude. I have played a little bit and I love the game so far. I also need some help finding the rings mentioned in the book. Waterbreathing, Firewalking, so on. It mentioned getting them before they are unavailable at level 10. I will appreciate any help. And if anyone sees a dark elf in rags wandering around looking for somewhere to start, that's probably me.

Thanks for your help. Even after playing the original campaigns on NWN several times, I realize I should have found this information a LONG time ago:::: where can I look to find what skills you can take, what they cost, and how they help you? When making my character, every time I played the OC, I just picked the *recommended* button. If you can reach above level 25 or so in HG, I want to experiment with different skills.

If I click on the little swords below my portrait, sometimes I see names I guess of other players. I am curious what HC means in someone's name. Are these authority figures of some kind? There are very rarely people playing while I am playing. Only twice I've seen another player off in the distance, and both times I have hidden somewhere, embarrassed at my character's attire. Also, because I can't tell when someone is talking specifically to me or even how to respond if they did.

HC in names indicate hard core player this means basically they have 1 life when they die the character is deleted. Rather than use the swords icon to see players try these commands instead ... !who .... lists all players on your current server along with level !who all ... lists all players on each server and their level !who all area class ... lists all players on each server their class and level and their location These and others will help you find party players of similar level to yourself. If you want to join someone on another server type this command !portal <and the server number you wish to go to> Hope these few examples help you Sapphire

Hello Thralia,
This is something I didn't learn until recently: If someone sends you a message, you'll see it in your left log (chat log?). Next to their message should be a very small portrait. To respond to them, all you need to do is click on that portrait and your message will be started in the chat bar at the bottom of the screen. I think this is for people on your server only (can't remember at the moment). If they sent you a message from another server, you can just type "!reply <your message>" and it's the same thing. Such messages are private.
You can also send a direct, private message to anyone on any server if they haven't contacted you first. I think it is "!tell <player's user name> <your message>", but my brain is foggy from fighting the flu, so it's best to check your journal for the exact composition of this SimTool command. On that note, I suggest perusing these SimTool commands at some point. Some of them I use constantly while playing (!who, !randomize, !wallet, !pcscry, !portal, !list, !count...).
If you want to talk or respond to someone else's character who is next to yours, you don't need to address the message to anyone. You can just type your message in the chat bar and it will be 'audible' to all characters nearby (assuming the chat option is on the default... "Talk"?). If you're in a party, you can change the chat option - which is to the left of the chat bar - to "Party". This means anything you 'say' will be written in the chat log of everyone in the party, no matter where they are (unless you are on the RP/HC server; things work a bit differently there).
Welcome to the game! Always know that people welcome questions on the !newbie chat channel.
- Niilo

As far as authority figures ingame goes--these can indeed be identified easily, although you'll need to use some of the !who commands SL posted to see how. The text [GUIDE PC] or [DM PC] after someone's name indicates that they are, surprise surprise, a Guide or DM (iirc the difference isn't important for a player to worry about as either one means they can log in with DM mode?)

What I mean by "you'll have to use the !who commands" is this: As you have already discovered, the Player tab (default keybind = P or the crossed sword icon as you found) shows players logged into the same server you are. This works perfectly, and it's adequate for most PWs or mods because they only use one server. However as you can see HG has several. You may learn a bit more of SIMTools with some reading but for the purpose of this discussion I will say that this is a brilliant system of chat commands. As SL posted there are some which can be used to figure out who is on a given server. Anyway the SIMTools "!who" commands operate a bit differently than the basic NWN player tab. The SIMTools commands incorporate many different pieces of information to display for you, and depending which command you use this can include level, class, proxy/reinc status, and coming full circle, Guide or DM status. So if you check Players tab you will not see any of these fancy things (you will however see -HC- denoting a hardcore toon, but that is because the -HC- part is added directly into the character name at creation). Use SIMTools and you will. Also don't fret if you can't ever find any DMs online--it may be infrequent, but that's okay, because most players can help answer questions and offer advice here in much the same way that it is a DM's "duty" to do so. Really here on HG, a DM toon is required only for a few bugfix type things, and it is unlikely you will encounter such a problem any time soon. I would not worry nearly so much about accidentally offending someone or being rude due to not knowing proper procedure--after all it is just a game, and the HG population tends to be a bit higher in age and maturity than the average online gaming community. If you are concerned with someone saying hi and not responding quick enough and they assume you are rude, well keep in mind you may run into someone and say hi and they could be away from the computer putting kids on the school bus or taking a work call
