Question about Seals and Keys....do you guys normally bank them after your quests...I've got an entire bag of holding and more of keys, should I just stash them except for the ones I'm actively doing (e.g. the farm house key for mother of corn)? also are the preLL tags roughly in order of difficulty? or does it vary a bit e.g. I was able to solo my way to the Shadow Elf Lord in his tree hut and kill him (combo of spell damage and just melee him to death), a level 33 tag. Is that a sign that I should try the 32 dragons or mother of corn solo? or no. My buffed AC is 86 at level 30 (sitting on 3 levels of XP). What color are the various boss dragons? I'm assuming that Blue (lithiucsas) is immune to electricity (e.g. don't bother with Storm of Vengeance for that one), do the others have standard elemental immunity? thanks.. D A key bag (or two) is highly useful imo. I don't pick any keys up at all on my new characters, i just give the complete key bag from previous playthroughs to the new character. This lets you skip some stuff, though if you want the full experience all over again then it's of low interest - or if you just don't level new characters too often to care. Also applies to later in the game, hoarding some keys can be useful, but to a lesser extent than 1-40.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all the help - finished ff all the 35 tags (Zhent mage Gr Ruined me with 1 shot. ). I'll probably head back there for XP in non-boss areas. My cleric and a barbarian went in duo to finish off Queen Z in the abandoned temple. The final level looked like it might be too much as it took us 12 minutes to finish the first Kurai as implosions didn't work (immune) and firestorm only did like 20 damage. Destruction was good but their heals made it last forever. Enter earthquake. Spawn 2 groups (10 mobs), 4 quakes to get them to use their heals 6ish more plus a few destructions and melee to finish them off. Much better. Queen Z was slow - had to go into town 4 times (maybe 5) but finally got her with destructions and earthquakes. Onto the BDD Knight and War Shrike.

Ok, so I've solo'd the Water Shrike Mother last night and took level 38. Once I get axilar, I can go to 40 (almost have the xp for that but sitting on 38 for tag). I had a few more gear and build questions.
In terms of gear - I've got an AC unbuffed of 80, with magic vestment on shield and life's grace it's 90, which has served pretty well so far. I currently have 0 tumble ranks and at 40 ill take monk for instant 8 AC. My current gear has +12 armor, shield +10 with magic vestment, +15 amulet, +10 deflection, +7 boots (lots of immunities). I have some bank chest 40 items that will increase (+14 or 15 armor, +14/15 shield, +12 or better boots, etc) AC, but I'll have to check immunities. In the water shrike area, I've started seeing +12 items drop. I know the max level for the nest mother is 37 and from the wiki random loot page, that UR gear starts dropping on level 36-40 areas. Which areas does that start at, so I know where to start looting (both for more +12 to 15 items for use and for gold to buy from auction/sell chest)? Should I just start doing the 40 tags and see which areas I survive well?
Once I tag Axilar and level to 40, I'll gain a bunch of AC (+4-5 shield, 8 tumble, 4 dodge to dodge cap) for a total around 106. Does that sound sufficient for all the pre-immortal battles? from Lynsander's post above it seems so.
Do you lose xp when you become immortal if you have more than 780k XP?
In terms of my build, I'm using the open sub Svirfneblin newbie cleric build that Poli posted in the open subrace. Right now I'm Cleric 37 Ranger 1 and at 40 it would be Cleric 38 ranger 1 monk 1. I have 180 million in the wallet just FYI. I find the ranger level useless at this point (don't need it for gear and have good simple weapons like morningstar and sickle for melee). Should I reincarnate now and get rid of ranger and start the 1 month clock ticking? or is it easy to get a UR book and just wait until I'm immortal, reinc to the UR sub, and then don't worry about the 3 month clock?
General question - I see if you're not immortal, if you reincarnate, a 1 month clock starts. If you're immortal, then it's a 3-month clock. If you reincarnate that PC before immortal (1 month clock) and the get immortality and start taking LL's, is the clock still unchanged (counting down wherever you were from that 1 month), or do 2 months get added on? or is that only if you are actually immortal at the time you reincarnate?
Just so I have the subrace books clear, do you need a level 50 PC to read the book to tag your account with it? I got gifted a couple and I tried reading it to tag y account and it said something like that. If so, then it makes my comment above about potentially getting an expensive book moot until this guy is leveled further.
When/where does the first breach/dispel/mords protection gear start dropping? Obviously for a caster, getting debuffed usually = death.
Are the wondrous tomes tagged? or do you just need to be level 41+ to use?
thanks again!

With 106 AC, you'll definitely be good in all pre-LL areas. I'm pretty sure that you need about 90 or so for the drow, and even tanking the Immortal or Lolth should be doable with gate + 106 AC. As for URs, I don't recall seeing them drop in pre-LL areas.
I just ran a few quick tests, and here are some data from an early LL zone, the desert:
Stinger archers have AB 94, meaning an AC of 114 or higher makes them only hit on a 20. Stinger archers have AB 89, meaning an AC of 109 or higher makes them only hit on a 20. Stinger priest's Implosions have DC 51 and SP 56, meaning you'd want a fortitude save of at least 49 (and SR as high as you can get it) to be reasonably safe from implodes.
Two other things to note are that Gate and eternal return are lifesavers at that level. Gate should soak a huge proportion of the damage you take for a short while, giving you easily enough time to cast GS and live. Eternal return is the necro (I think) epic spell for clerics, and is like a stone of rebirth that puts you straight into GS: another good lifesaver!
As for reincarnation, it's your call. I'd wait a while though. Thri-kreen is an easy subrace to get (you'll probably get it really soon actually), and makes a decent cleric. Reincarnating up a tier of subraces means you'll need two books, but they're easy to come by. Unlike many subraces, thri-kreen is a set drop, meaning every time you complete a certain boss, you're guaranteed to find one. The boss is actually on the pre-LL tags list, so you'll get one by accident at some point!
Other than that, I'd recommend partying up from low LLs until you're at least level 45-50. With BUR subbies and top-notch URs, I wouldn't try soloing LL runs until at least 45 or so. Parties give great xp, loot, and often really add to the enjoyment of the game. A cleric is always welcome, as spells like miracle, Aegis, girding of the faithful, and undeath's eternal foe grant some great party utility. Implosion is also a good way to make friends!
You do not lose xp when you get immo, but it lets you take levels 41+. The reincarnation timer is one month if you were pre-immo when you reinced. Becoming immo doesn't change that.

1) AC at 106 is very nice even for immortal battle. Even more so when being a caster. 2) You don't lose XP when becomming Immortal. Actually you usually gain enough XP while doing the level 40 tags that you can take level 41 or even 42 once you gain immortality. 3) I think the ranger level is to get 1 free feat from it that might be important for your build. 4) You need to be at least level 50 to read UR subrace books. You also need 1 extra book of the same subrace if you want to upgrade when reincarnating (so you would need two Fallen Angel books for example). 5) Breach/Dispel/Mords protection is on UR gear, namely boots and rings. There is one set Mord immunity ring I know of that can be used only by immortal character though. 6) Wondrous tomes are not tagged, you just need to be level 41+.
EDIT: URs do drop in preLL areas, I remember finding my first one in Deepbat caverns for example.

While the Ranger level is primarily taken for ease of leveling (via Animal Empathy), as Methes said it also gives +1 feat so it's not entirely useless - it is still a viable choice for endgame builds, though arguably sub-optimal in most cases. Level 50 will come quite soon (XP rates increase enormously at 41+), so definitely wait for an UR race IMO. In the original 'Newbie Cleric' thread, I wrote: I've written three builds here, each designed for a specific stage of your toon's 'life'. -> Make Version #1 as a fresh toon, and once you hit Level 40 start saving up cash to buy some Fallen Angel race-books. -> At Level 50, you can reincarnate into Version #2, a Fallen Angel build which will be relatively strong everywhere in the server and is a great starting point to explore the Hells in. Fallen Angel is an extremely strong UR race and can almost be considered as a weak BUR race. Their selling price will vary entirely on the seller and your negotiation skills, but 100-150 million per book should be sufficient. The 3 month timer is not a huge issue, good BUR subraces are very expensive and Fallen Angel will be quite sufficient for your needs. Note that you will need *two* books (one to read and tag the subrace, the other to hold during reincarnation), and to be at least Level 50 to read them.

A big thanks to everyone who's helped me so far - my cleric got his immortality last night! Lots of people helped, from partying, to gear, to advice. Thanks!
