So I am trying to make any viable toons out of some very old ones I have in my vault... This one would be reincing a pure Ranger at 12mil+ xp, lvl 58 no ws token or hells... Would one be better off reincing to some kind of swiss army tank build like Tomaans or Desos and playing lash with high con or taking the class combo for something like Stormlord and sitting out the 3 months or something else? Toon has been sat for 2-3 years so time is not really an issue. It just seems a shame to let 12mil xp go to waste... Any positive thoughts or input greatly appreciated. Regards, Trubs

Stormlords have no ranger levels; at 0x low level make a lash (ranger cc, or shifterbased) that contributes more than any dps you could make.

You could also make a ranger to be reincarnated into a caster with a temporarily ranger level (then remove that ranger level afterwards)- over 2-3 reincarnations. Bonus points if you upgrade it to a cheap bur subrace along the way.
You could however - transition it into iron chimera then into my other shifter build - Cunning Shifter (Shifter 27 / Druid 8 / Ranger 5).
The question is do you have another hells worthy character to use meanwhile?
You could in theory have a storm lord with 4 ranger and 1 paladin (or monk) - but it would be weak and still take 2 reincarnations. I cannot comment on how to build a strong storm lord.

Thanks for the answers. I hadn't thought about going caster over a few reincarnations. That's not a bad idea that I might just do with one of the other rangers gathering dust in my vault. I think i'll also try the shifter based lash. I've recently reinced a lash so it will be interesting to see how they differ. I've plenty of other stuff to be playing so that is not a problem. More toons than time sadly... Regards, Trubs

Pure ranger using a two handed weapon is pretty good. Medium sized ranger is restricted to spear or trident, small sized ranger can use any medium weapon. Large sized ranger should be reincarnated to a smaller size.
Ranger has good defenses. Armor class is higher using a two handed weapon than most sword and board tanks, as long as wisdom is 30 and in light armor. Good conceal with a a high hide skill and self buff with camouflage. Protection from elements spell gives 20% elemental immunity which makes immunity coverage that much easier. Polymorph Self spell provides a lot of utility, can have multiple versions of it active at same time.
Wiki is pretty good in the order which favored enemies should be taken, though dragon is ranked way to high and elf to low ( there are elves in abyss ). Do pretty good damage against favored enemies, particularly ones that are vulnerable to positive damage because of blade thirst spell.

Pure ranger using a two handed weapon is pretty good. PROS + AC seems decent (a Wisdom +10 - top a light shield easily) + 6 Con damage (per hit?) with Called Shot + Invisibility Purge means way less concealment (flat -8%) for foes + Extra positive damage CONS - Low Physical damage bonus, no crit multiplier increase, no extra attacks - mediocre dps - Low-ish Dex for Checks, Will and Reflex --- Given the low damage potential - I'd rather recommend a full DC called shot melee build, to capitalize on the invisibility purge and positive damage.

With devastating + overwhelming critical a 2 hand ranger can have a crit range of 14-20x4 and a bastard sword does 2d8 base damage (best of any weapon). Devastating critical counts as a crit multiplier increase and gives a nice boost to damage against crit vulnerable monsters.
Rangers can be multiclassed for extra overall damage and/or UMD +tumble skill splash at the cost of called shot dc. I really like being able to use scrolls with UMD for greater sanctuary, black blade of disaster and Undeaths Eternal Foe (I hate blindness).
35 ranger/1 bard/4 rdd happens to be one of my favorite builds. It balances high melee damage with actual survivability (very important). It is my preference because I don't like to be reliant on called shot and enjoy having UMD.

As Raj said, some kind of inflictor (either Ranger CC Lash or Shifter-Tank using Lizardman Shape - both are fine) is by far the most useful endgame tank until you have some Paragon levels/demi-iterations and better gear. Although your own damage won't be stellar, you will boost the party's damage significantly.
Drunkenboaster's 2H small Ranger is a decent way to go, a ~pure Invisibility Purge is very strong in certain areas. I would go pure 40 Ranger, but some focused versions (at higher levels) could be 36 Ranger/4 Fighter for access to the Weapon Specialization tree, or even 31 Ranger/4 Fighter/5 Harper Scout (which loses Invisibility Purge almost entirely, but functions well as a vanilla 2H damager).
I would advise against something like Bard/RDD splash; you lose benefits such as AC, Invisibility Purge potency and Improved Evasion, while the bonuses of 10% absolute immunity and access to Use Magic Device are just not worth the sacrifices IMO. While this may have been different in the past, the abundance of rods/potions/useable items makes UMD pretty limited apart from some niche instances.

Wow... More food for thought! So I reincarnated 1st toon to a shifter based lash. Seems fun and sturdy so far but haven't played it into hells yet. I may have a few shifter based questions later if I can't figure out the answers myself. Mostly regarding buffs and weapon swapping at the moment. Zens are indeed fun to play. My fav toon is x4 with some pt2 Abyss tags and is, Insh'Allah and every other god willing, the only one likely to get x5 and a Prince win while i still breath! I can almost hear Raj coughing indignantly as I type this but I still think they add value if played right (nasty s**t snipage rather than, or at least before, trash removal). Zens aside, next on the block is a dual wielding Pharlan (Based on SG's build) that I really enjoyed playing until it got way too squishy around Phleg. It almost certainly suffered from gear issues as it is still clad in unrandomized Urs with a couple lonely Burs. It is x0 with about 15mil xp. I am quite interested in the 2H small ranger idea and would love a bit more input into how to go about it. DB you said reinc large size to smaller but from Pharlan which i guess is medium would you still go smaller than that? If so what race/subby would you recommend. I think I have most Burs open to me but builder I am most definitely not. Anyhoo, I appreciate all the time you guys have taken to respond and with luck I may end up with a vault full of (more) up to date toonage. Regards, Trubs

Hey it's fine, when the cleric player is crap, it's time for the zen to shine! Zens aside, next on the block is a dual wielding Pharlan (Based on SG's build) Please no assassin splash, that's a joke. 39/1 (rogue or paladin depends if you feel about picker duty... hint: don't) benefits from cl egos better than dc ones: being melee, concealdrop aura is better than +1 dc to cs. Or pure if no egos available. Best dps build would be a 35/4fighter/1pal build halfling zeny but 40% xppen...

Heh... Cheers Raj! Prayers now going out for uber strong cleric free/shite pugs that have a spare spot at exactly the right time that I can play! With regard to the 40% xp pen halfling zeny (hope you are being serious here). That would take 14.8mil down to lvl 56/57ish. Is that about right? I don't really care about the penalty as it is still better than doing nothing. There is nothing in the ranger thread with that combo. Without sounding too needy and retorts telling me to get thee to thy test area. What would be a swift lvl breakdown of that build? Ideas and banter always appreciated... Regards, Trubs

It's just a way to get great damage (weap spec and preferably a 19-20x3 slashing -bsword?-, with dev crit) on a str based small race who could wield it 2h but still benefit from ranger ac. Same trick you can pull on a medium sized ranger but spear/trident are quite crap in comparison. I am serious about 40% because zeny has neither class as FC. Could go koly for 20% xppen only, at lil worse stats but still ok. Getting back to 60 is not an issue, now go calculate how much you need for 80 tho Endgame toy, obviously not posted on forum cuz forum builds are for scrubs who splash assassin
