To guarantee success over so many other books would demand an extraordinary price considering how many "meh" XR books there are; yet the idea that it would remove so many canopics out of circulation without adding tradeable goods into the mix or forcing players through the "well, I didn't get the ideal thing but maybe I'll do xyzc of this that I now have" is questionable.
There are merits to people getting the thing they didn't want that has a niche that might make them try something out or trade with other people for various things. If we all just went through "ok I want that and that, i'm gonna get nothing else (with canopics) for ages but when I get that then my goals are all reached" it would be far less of a journey, and lead to less interaction with other players.
Edit: but on the other hand, limiting the pool for extra price wouldn't go all the way but even the odds a bit. 250 for a book, 1000 for a book within a specified base race or some such. Specific book of choice would have to cost an unimaginable amount of canopics, not even worth considering imo.
Limiting the pool even would be a huge huge victory. That for 1000 I’d take any day of the week. The odds for XR books are insane, even to just get one of whatever you want. And as you said, a guaranteed price would need to be insanely high. Even that would be worth it. If most people don’t leverage it given what they sacrifice? Fine.
For some people the randomness and making that niche thing to the idea you didn’t consider is great. For others being able to realize a specific dream and do a specific task if equally appealing. Provide opportunities for both to exist or a means to facilitate the opposite side of that.
You have a significantly larger pool. Treat races categorically like you do with every other XR type. That is a win.
But yeah, I think most canopic changes should wait further content/canopic sources even if I agree that there should be a high cost racepool divider. Looking at it, the amount of races split 250 / 1000 would definitely not be fair with 7 base races and differing amounts of XR subs among said subraces (consider 3 halflings, 15 humans), and some base races having disproportionate amount of [multipurpose/dualraceXR] races aka Elves/H-Elves.
Would be hard to balance the scales no matter what, and especially without adding new XR subraces to balance things out - which might be a curious time for a [HeyGuys! Got XR ideas? Did your class get shafted? Suggestions and related discussion for The EvolutionProject or whatever in the Suggestions X-subforum] if that were an interesting prospect. Could leave some of the old shitraces in there as YouLost drops and just implement new better ones for the shafted classes instead of some eventual rework (or just rework and add more, if that is of interest).
Also, I don't think I can emphasis this enough - the fact that people have book piles dusting in chests is a _good_ thing. That incentivizes trading and interaction with others over going for the solo/duoboxing goals directly.
