So I’ve got home from work today, took dog out etc etc, sat down to come play and the game won’t launch... just appears as a background process in the task manager. I’ve tried all sorts of things... complete ininstall/reinstall, reinstalling direct x, disabling sound.
As far as I’m aware nothing should have changed on my laptop since I played last night and this has me completely baffled. (Not especially tech savvy btw)
Anyone any ideas?

Sorted... apparently windows ran an update that broke something somewhere... uninstalling allowed nwn to launch

Just for reference:
What version of Windows is your computer running? Do you have the KB# of the update that did that?

Just for the sake of the data point, my own Win10 box received that update yesterday and so far no issues; crossing fingers.

I just found out how to get nwn working on windows 10 PC that was having issues. Not sure if that update was the issue, but did solve the problem we were having here. symptom 1: start the game and then just black screen. symptom 2: start the game .. the splash screen animations play.. then black screen. alt+tab back and forth finally got the menu screen, but could not click any buttons. following many recommendations found googling around this seems to have done the trick. go into the game directory ========================== right click nwmain executable and choose properties, and set compat mode to win xp service pack 3 also edit nwn.ini file (windows hides file extensions by default.. may just say nwn) Go to [Display Options] Add the line exactly as follows: Disable Intro Movies=1 Save your changes and close the file. ========================== Now make sure to run the game as admin right click on the shortcut you use to start the game and choose "Run As Administrator" .. This worked for the widows machine I had access to .. Hope this helps Cheers

Cheers Tac, it simply wouldn’t launch, just start a process in the background without ever trying to open a window for it or anything. Only way I’ve found round it is to uninstall that update. I tried that method you just shared and a dozen others I found via google but only uninstalling that particular windows update seems to work 🤷🏻♂️

Am glad you were able to find a work around.. Out of curiosity, I google that update and this is what it said about some users having issues with that update. Is one of the reasons I celebrate every day that I am a Linux user. Cheers

Of course, when the *nix server crashes in the middle of combat operations off the coast of Africa, it is not nearly as easy to recover....

Ouch ... That speaks to the abilities of the admin.. .. The bright side .. if your lives had been dependant on a windows machine, you all may not have made it back at all. * BSOD can get you killed for real * Glad to see you made it home.

Lost 40 million plus exp and a demigod hardcore character due to a disconnect when I was playing in Oinos on Chistmas day................not a good present!

Still don't know how it happened, but the system lost the /etc/passwd file. I had to crack the system with a master load DAT tape cartridge because it wouldn't boot into any of the run levels. Everything was there except the /etc/passwd, so once I got it restored from the tape, it was golden, but that system required a 35 hour rebuild if I hadn't been able to recover. Sad thing is, they shipped the Marines out without an admin. It wasn't even "my" system (Navy geek, not a Marine), so they would have had to ship us a contractor while we had operations on the beach.

And it’s at it again. Started rubber banding a little a few hours back, was invited to my first abyss group, rather excited, rubber banding got steadily worse over the next half hour, eventually becoming completely unplayable. Logged off, rebooted my laptop and now it won’t launch at all. Currently reinstalling everything again and crossing my fingers, but I’m not overly optimistic.
