Hello,
I recently reincarnated my level 40 who is pre-immo. He was somewhere between 1.1mil and 1.2mil exp while finishing up tags and waiting on an immo run, and I figured I would reinc before immo to fix a few things and minimize the wait time if I want to do it again. I was surprised to see my exp get reset back to 780k after the reinc, as nothing on the reinc guides or FAQ hinted that I would lose the exp over level 40 and the reincarnation thingy even listed my current exp before the confirmation. Is there any way I could get back the exp that was removed?

Pre-immo reincarnation sets you back to the level you are (excess exp goes poof), post-immo has a bit different ruling with increasing amounts of exp lost as you get higher in levels.
So nah, its gone. But don't worry too much, you'll get it back fast in post-immo content - that is, your net total experience loss is less than 1 fully completed high exp yielding 41-60 run.

I appreciate the reply, but I would like an admin's input before resigning myself to losing the experience. I understand that it is potentially a single later run, but those runs are a bit more rare for players who don't have multiple characters to play.

You can check the link above for a pretty well laid out list of the potential issues. If you reincarnate before you go immortal, the maximum you will get back is 780,000xp. Additionally, any legendarly level tags you may have acquired (myco, uro, etc) will go away if you reincarnate a non-immortal. The good news is it's 30 days for a new reincarnation which isn't terrifically long. ReincarnationThe above link is for the wiki. I didn't see this information in there, but I might have missed it.

I did read both the wiki and the FAQ before reincarnating, and felt quite confident that I would be reset to my full exp - especially after the reincarnation thingy informed me exactly what amount of exp I had (and implied that it would be transferred over).

I've just updated the wiki to indicate any experience past 780k will be lost if you reincarnate as a non-immortal, it has always been this way and usually if people are planning on reincarnating a non-immortal they do it as soon as they hit 40. You get to completely change your classes so its a huge benefit over potentially multiple three month cycles that would be required to do this for an immortal character.

"It has always been that way" is not particularly helpful to new players. Is there really no way we can consider this a special circumstance? I am glad it was updated for future players, but is there really reason to punish my experience for stumbling upon this oversight?

The good news is, as a new immortal toon, you gain xp very fast. I don't know how much xp you may have lost, but a lvl 40 doing desert + DB will gain over 1 Million xp. The more xp you have, the less you gain, for a given run. Basically, if you had a friend you leveled toons together, and you reincarnated but they did not. They will be at a higher level than you. Then from now on you run together, you would gain more xp for the same run with your friend making you catch back up with them at some point in time. I absolutely know how much that stings to lose xp. However, as a fresh immortal, the likely xp lost is a drop in the bucket in for
what you need to be 80 = 125,000,000. Also be advised, there is a penalty for reincarnating after lvl 60, and it is quite steep. An example, I lost over 10 Million xp for a reincarnation I did on a toon. I did feel the cost was worth the benefit I gained in toon performance after that though. There is a formula in the forums on how to calculate the loss. The closer to lvl 80 you get the less xp is taken. I wrote a xp calculator bash script (Linux shell script) to see how much reincarnation costs above 60 if any one is interested.

It already said 'If the previous character was immortal and reached level 41, the legendary experience that character obtained will now be given and the !level command or The Altar of Legends can now be used to continue leveling.' I have just edited it to specifically say if you are not immortal you will lose any post 40 exp.

If you see me on hit me up and I’ll run you through a few things to more than make up for what was lost or give you a sapphire worth 500,000 XP. Problem solved.

Yeah, I get lack of documentation leading to this is annoying - causes a loss of agency over the matter, or just a feeling of being cheated. Couldn't really offer much else as an answer - maybe you'll still get an admin response.

We'll replace 300k on a one-time-only basis. Track down a dm ingame and point them to this thread. I'm going to assume that future posters have read the now-updated FAQ and deny future requests of this type.
