I apologize if this is a completely ignorant suggestion (ie. if it is already available) but have the developers considered listing what kind of physical damage a mob does to your character? (slashing, piercing, bludgeoning)
When I wander into an area that is a bit above my level and get slaughtered, I cannot tell what type of physical damage was being used to kill me. It simply says "Damages Leroy X (physical)". I would like the ability to learn and then plan for my next attempt. Often, it takes a lot of work to get back to the area, so trial and error does not really add to game play experience (imho) I don't think that this would be too unbalancing to the game. From a role play aspect . . . Well, I guess that, in the afterlife, my character would be aware if he was being beat, cut or stabbed before dying and would retain those memories after resurrection. ;-)

I don't know how much use this would truly be for you. Very rarely do items exist in the 40+ range that give a single physical resist or immunity type. Often times you get all three, and also often, they are the same amount (at least for set and unrandomized items which can be a lot of what you're working with). Ideally, you want to strive for 25-30 physical resists, and then pump the physical immunities as much as possible. Casters prioritize less immunities for slot gear. What you play and the area factor in. I think you'd be better served pushing AC / conceal.

Use the !list imm command and you'll see where you are lacking in immunity/resistance and then you can play with your gear to try and fill any gaps or optimise for where you are planning to go. Whilst you will never be able to completely cover everything that is thrown at you you should be able to mitigate a significant quantity of it with well optimised gear.

:-D I know what _my_ resistances and immunities are. (although thank you for that "!list imm" command. It will be much more handy than checking all my gear!)
I want to know what type I am _being hit with_ from the bandit chief, or the rat or kobold king (yes, that is the newbie stage I am at. I did finally beat them, though!)
Yes, I won't be able to block all the damage, but I can block enough of a chunk out of it so that I can survive, if I know what immunity and resistance I need to max.

I hear what you're saying, but think elemental damage is a greater concern for survival than physical - you can see that in the logs. And obviously, high AC and concealment make up for a lack of damage resistance/immunity. It's especially true in higher level runs where enemies can reduce resistances through affliction attacks and spells.
As a general rule, tho, A front line tank with lowish AC would want 10/ - 15/ resistance and 30-40% immunity preLL. 20/ and 50-60% LL. 30/ and 60-70% in paragon levels. Even still, you'll want crit immunity or high parry.

Bottom line is we cannot make this edit without a plugin - and I'm not sure even then. I will say that when making creatures I always try to pick the logical type, though sometimes I will use a double type, and if no 'logical' type is clear I will decide based on what we ware aiming for in the area (e.g., lots of bludgeon in aboleths). If the weapon is visible, you can tell based on what the weapon is. However, on many models it will not be.
