Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, my sympathy goes out to the British citizens as well as to the German citizens, as the Royal Family is a descendant of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a younger branch of the House of Wettin. But during World War I, anti-German sentiment was so strong among the British population that it led the Royal Family to change all their German titles and surnames to English-sounding ones. On July 17, 1917, the royal house and family were renamed "House of Windsor" by proclamation of King George V.
