Items should definitely NOT be sorted out based on class.
Feel free to come up with, establish, correct the current naming convention along with re-organizing the pages would be my best guess. It's a sandbox, everyone gets to play.

i just don't see how i can arbitrarily set some rules, just because i think they are the way to go maybe someone had a really good plan when putting all those categories in, and what keeps the next person from changing them all again? how do other wikis handle these decisions? this is how i see items: - ammunitions
- arrows
- bolts
- bullets
- darts
- shurikens
- throwing axes
- amulets
- armors
- belts
- boots
- bracers/gloves
- cloaks
- flags/torches
- helmets
- magic staffs
- rings
- shields
- weapons
- daggers
- kukris
- handaxes
- bastard swords
- battleaxes
- clubs
- dire maces
- double axes
- dwarven waraxes
- greataxes
- halberds
- heavy crossbows
- heavy fails
- kamas
- katanas
- light crossbows
- light flails
- light hammers
- longbows
- longswords
- maces
- morning stars
- quarterstaffs
- rapiers
- scimitars
- scythes
- shortbows
- shortswords
- sickles
- slings
- spears
- two-bladed swords
- warhammers
- whips
- Rares
- Ultra-Rares
- Beyond Ultra Rares
- Lolth Items
- Moad Items
- Immortal Items
- Ssithrak Items
- Dachy Items
- Beholder Items
- Dustbone Items
- Illithid Items
- Tiamat Items
...
- Asmodeus (?) Items
aside from any applicable origin tags like "Rare" or "Dustbone" and the category "Items" which should include everything, - weapons and ammunitions would always fall into 2 other categories, namely "Weapons" and the specific type, like "Longswords"
- rings would be in "Rings", and also in "Immunity Rings" if it is one
- Robes are in Armors
and thats it. i'm still not sure where to place a baatezu plate for example. is it a dustbone item or simply an immortal item (since that's what you need to wear it)? should "beholder items" instead be "level 55 items"? should shields have 3 categories for size (which i kinda like)? and if so, should armor then have 9 subcategories (which i don't really like)? should throwing axes, darts and shurikens maybe be in weapons and not in ammunitions?

Stick with the outline and skip your further comments mostly... you were on the right track. Under the headings of the titles you can list the restrictions for gear gathered rather than create a category. -Res Ammunitions should be one Armors should be one Shields should be one The description can take care of the rest... Also you can always create a template to follow too for the gear item drop type image Follow? Don't ask about the template thing from me though... I just follow what I see on the wiki since I like to pretend I know what I'm doing

A wiki's success doesn't necessarily depend on its astounding information design, but rather on the people who use it; it's easy to move pages (with e.g. spelling mistakes in their name) or delete them (if you're an administrator), or even simply recategorize things.

I just got finished adding about 100 new items and have a long list of more things to add. I think all the immunity rings have a page except for the pyramid ones. I tried to add most of the items from the recent "Best items" thread, which meant a lot of the more useful Lowbie items (with a new category for them). The upside is people can see those items, the downside is when you look through Boots, Shields, etc. you get more than just the interesting URs. Regarding secrets, it looks like some of the class items are shown. This is ok as long as other information isn't added? I noticed a lot of additions along the lines of "Fortitude: link to nwnwiki" Is that really necessary? If this was modified in HG and the page showed that, that'd be fine, but as it is it doesn't seem to add any value. A big question I had was with the "Drop" value in the item template. There are a number of drops I can think of: - Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Ultra-Rare
- Beyond Ultra-Rare
- Static (always found in a given place, e.g. Epic Flag)
- Random in location (same location, may be there, e.g. Rune of Return)
- Random boss drop (e.g. Orb of Charm, D'qarite Robes)
- Set boss drop (Dusty Leg bone)
- Set treasure room drop
Not to mention the distinction between boss and miniboss (e.g. Surrogate and Thrall Master). Some items are listed Static, some "Set-Illithid", some "Boss Random Drop". Any suggestions for cleaning this up? I think I will make a "Drop" page to describe the consensus (which of course is a Wiki page so is dynamic). I'm thinking the "Level 55 Drops" Category should be changed to "Beholder Drops" to match the others such as Illithid, Dachy, Ssithrak, and Pyramid. Are there any other specific level 55 items? Every conversation I've had about them in game has always referred to them as Beholder items, not Level 55 items or Zorgbot items. I may just go do this unless anyone objects. I'm not sure about shield size be three categories -- doesn't seem like there are that many shields. I'd vote for class categories before that. But of course feel free if you really think it's best. I really don't see a need for breaking out armors except maybe a Robes subcategory. Baatezu plate needs level 50 to wear, not just immo. To me it's a Dustbone item or just a Static Drop with no other info. It wouldn't seem like a bad thing to add a level requirement to the item template. I'm not sure if useful searches could be done from it though (maybe special pages?). Is there a place on the Wiki where these discussions take place or is this the right place?

Drops:
Common, Un-Common, Rare, Ultra-Rare, Beyond Ultra-Rare, and Set
That pretty much sums up the 'Set' drop items... maybe location should take the duty of where such as: Dusty, Sissth, etc

...Is there a place on the Wiki where these discussions take place or is this the right place? my post on page three addressed some of these. no many seemed to have any opinions apparently. on the contrary. since then, even more incomplete and unsorted categories have been added. i don't think a lot of people care about properly organizing this.

my post on page three addressed some of these. no many seemed to have any opinions apparently. Yes, I read through that but didn't seem to find much consensus in further posts nor on the Wiki. Categories needs some work. Regarding things like "cleric items" and so on, is there any way to have a "Class Items' page with subcategories? It seems the categories are flat, where what I'd like to see is [[Category:Class Items:Cleric]] which would add the item to the cleric subcategory of the Class Items category. Alternate method -- alphabetizing so we have separate categories 'Class Items: Cleric' and then a single page (not category) 'Class Items' showing all the different categories. Another alternate method -- don't have the category at all, just have pages for each item that some ambitious person fills in with items (just the links, which don't have to exist but can be filled in by the community). The downside of the latter is that it isn't using the Wiki's category logic so brand new items aren't auto-added (on the assumption that the person adding the item properly filled in categories). Regarding drops, the list resonance378 listed isn't very similar to what the Wiki has. There are lots of "Boss Random Drop" items, though some of these are dropped by the boss, some by a miniboss, and some in a treasure room. There are a few items listed with 'Set' as Drop, with many of them having things like 'Set-Illithid' to indicate the items are not Random Loot but are items found there. But that doesn't disambiguate between things like the Pentavite Shield and the Rune of Return, though perhaps it isn't needed. Should there be a new template entry for 'Location' along with 'Drop'? Or should we figure the Drop indicates rarity or Boss drop while the Category (e.g. Ssithrak Drops) gives enough information on where? Some items: - Epic Flag of Ascension. Static drop in non-LL area
- Pentavite Shield. Static drop in categorized LL area.
- Boots of Bolstering. Static drop on miniboss in LL area.
- Rune of Return. 'Random' drop in LL area (always in same place, the container always returns one of about 4 items).
- D'qarite Robes. 'Random' drop on boss in LL area.
- Signet of the Nine. Set drop on boss in LL area.
- Valheru Plate. 'Random' drop in treasure room in LL area.
- Mindstill. Static drop in treasure room of LL area.

my post on page three addressed some of these. no many seemed to have any opinions apparently. Yes, I read through that but didn't seem to find much consensus in further posts nor on the Wiki. Categories needs some work. that's exactly what i am saying. there is no consensus. everybody just puts things in how they like it. i would like that too, but... that's not possible. all you can do is, have templates, which if necessary can include other templates. the problem is, as i mentioned, competing ways of sorting items that are incompatible with each other and each would require own hierarchies. a person adding an item would then need to know all those hierarchies to be able to categorize an item correctly. all this is not going to happen without some clear defined way of how items are to be put in. ...and that requires consensus. i was actually thinking of removing all those class related category entries from the items, but then somebody put in even more and i was thinking what gives me the right to do so. my opinion: that's never going to work and will make it worse you just have to stop somewhere. you can't just add categories for every occasion. at some point the user will have to use the search function.

So, who takes the pictures for the HG Wiki? I've got a number of BURs that I don't see listed up there, and I'd be willing to let whoever does the uploading take pictures of these items.
I don't have the photoshop/image editing software to do this myself.

Take a screenie, paste it into MSPaint, use the selector tool to select the part of the image that's the description, copy it, select all, delete, paste, make the image smaller (get rid of the white background), save, upload.

One problem with the simple method for BURs is that the properties often extend past one screen, requiring some more cut and past work. Putting just the bottom section on the Wiki tends to leave out important info such as "requires XYZ to use" which means someone else is going to have to do it again.
At least Delf's post got me to put 25 or so items I've had sitting on my hard drive up on HGWiki, so there are a few more BURs and Hells set drops there. I volunteered to take screenshots and do the compositing, cropping, and uploading for any items Delf has.
