Retroactive HP is calculated from whichever point you choose. Since I chose my point to be L60, I used the corresponding Con modifier for that level. Regardless of whether or not you have any LLs, the Con modifier will always retroactively apply to your HP, no matter what it is...so the point of interest doesn't actually matter, just what the Con is at any given time. The method I used to calculate it may be flawed, so I'll try a differently structured approach.
First, calculate your HP gains up to L40. Add to that any HP gains from Legendary levels, add the Toughness bonus, and finally add retroactive HP you've gained from con increases during your legendary progression.
Calculate HP to 40: With a con modifier of 15 at 40, this is 40 * (d12 + 15) or 1080 HP. Legendary HP: Calculated previously as 612 HP Toughness bonus: 60 HP Retroactive HP gain: You gained a total of 14 Con points, so you added 7 overall to the modifier. The game will then calculate the retroactive HP your character should receive based on that, which should be 7 * 40 or 280
So the final HP using that method would be 1080 + 612 + 60 + 280 or 2032...which is what you got earlier. However, this does not take into account the HP gained from Con increasing items, which adds another 12 to your con, or a 6 modifier. This adds another 6 * 40 = 240 to your HP, netting you a total of 2272 HP.

Perfect! Facinating how different approaches lead to the same result! And thanks for the reminder of the +12 Con item bonus which I forgot as well. I'm much more comfortable with the HP calculations now thanks to your expertise!

I'm no master, but there's a lot of things you can do with this game if you just work around with the numbers.
