Had an idea borrowed from some MMO's i've played. Adding some sort of found/dropped crafting material that can be turned in to the blacksmith npc to make you something. This could also do a check for craft ________ skill to be successful.
This might also help out in getting people to explore seldomly visited areas where the material could be found.
For low levels the DC could be something like 10-15 thus requiring no skill, but luck. Higher levels could require much higher DC's.
For inflation/excessive these materials or the rewards could be made non-droppable. However it would make items such as smithy's mail have the potential of becoming obscenely valuable w/regards to the rewards.
