Idea number 2;

On meeting the requirements for an added damage type, you gain a new item; one for each damage type. "Way of the Staff - Fire", "Way of the Staff - Cold" etc.
Using "Way of the Staff - Cold" changes damage added to staff to cold damage, etc etc.
This adds a few more items to your inventory, but I think it would be absolutely worth it, and in keeping with the speed with which a normal mage can adapt their tactics to suit their situation.
What do you think?

Too much time and effort involved?
Would make a world of difference to playing a staffmaster in my opinion, if you could (and wanted to) find the time for it.

Players have already suggested feasible workarounds to the difficulty you are complaining of. Not happening.
