My thought is no, because the bonus to skills from equipment is still 50. Even if you have a -10 penalty, you can still only have +50 from equipment...so if you have items adding up to 60, you only get a +50 bonus from them, and on top of that you add your penalty of -10 to come to +40.

So, can this build open DC 171 locks or not? ;D

Any build with 6 or greater dexterity, rogue as control class, and ESF Open Lock can open any lock on HG:
63 base Open Lock skill 10 ESF Open Lock 50 equipment --- 123
So you need +4 from dexterity modifier (6 dex + 12 from equipment gives you 18 dex, which gives you a +4 modifier) to hit the 127 cap.

With the new changes in hell a dex based rogue might be the way to go again as is can skip the focus: ol.

Revisiting the issue of max skill bonuses when penalties are applied, if Dodge AC bonus can surpass 20 with penalties, why can't OL bonuses? Does someone have a skill high enough that they can actually test this?

and a just so you know. I took epic disarm and am hoping that 2 dungeoncrawler rings (+4 search) will cover for missing epic search.

Search from items caps at +50. With 63 search skill and +50 from items you hit 113; you'll need at least a +14 Intelligence modifier (38 Intelligence) to reach the 127 cap without ESF Search.

There are set drop Search rings that give +10 each. In fact, the merchants in town might sell them.

Unfortunately, you need a +14 modifier - that means a 38 Intelligence, which means your base Intelligence must be at least 26.

Basically build a rogue with ESF in all the relevant skills ;D
Acaos, is Spot needed at all in HG or is it all planned to Search? Would be good for us players to know as it is not clear cut what you would plan within the dungeons as both skilss are sort of vague when talking about invisible/hidden objects.
Cheers Lala

spot is only needed to find hidden (or invisible) creatures. Seach is to find traps and hidden doors etc
