5-Rogue/7-WM/28-SD
I’m posting this build because I like Shadowdancers, I’d like to see more of them, and no one else has posted a dex-based SD (which seems odd to me; apologies if I missed it somewhere).
Before getting into the actual build I’ll go over pros and cons:
Pros: 130 ac with ok gear, epic dodge, 58% conceal. You don’t get hit. Period. You can disappear at will (GS). Very useful if your party is about to wipe, or you’re in trouble. Just disappear and move to a less dangerous spot or rez your allies. This build is good in caster parties since you can keep stuff bunched and busy while they wail on them from behind. Kind of like a DD, but you don’t get hit. 100% immune to negative energy, all necromancy spells (horrid wilting), and death magic. Great reflex saves + evasion = no damage from many spells and attacks (meteor storm). AC from shadow evade is dodge ac, so you can use elemental immunity boots without worrying about ac.
Cons: Shadow evade can be dispelled/morded, but thankfully it’s infinite usage. Low spell resistance and fort./will saves. Implode is your bane. Thankfully you can learn where they are and what casts them so you can either take out the casters beforehand or avoid the situation. To be stoned or sanded you have to be hit, enough said (although it does happen, but not often). Low damage to critters with critical hit immunity. It will take forever to kill a golem without help (but you won’t get hit .
I have taken this character everywhere but Illithids or the Pyramid. In the desert I avoid windtalkers, but will charge any group of arrow flinging devariels. Ssithraks? Pffft. Please. I can’t be hit! Although the occasional implode or mord (after ts) is annoying. Beholders are a fun run. With the right equipment I can tank this place. Dusty? Well, Dusty is all about kickback protection. Once that is taken care of it’s smooth sailing.
So, like I said, you’ll be living longer than anyone else, but you won’t be soloing anything either. This is a party character.
I used a human wraith for this build because it lends itself so well to the SD prerequisites. A pixie would be good as well for the added spell resistance, but the number of rogue levels would be switched around. Also, instead of rogue you could use ranger for dual-wielding, or fighter for slightly better ab (not sure how much), but you’d be giving up the fun of opening/disarming stuff and the UMD skill. It’s a personal preference.
