Is heavy armor truly needed / wanted? You said in the gnoll guide that newbies like the option. What are your thoughts on that?

The sheer number of heavy armors in the game make this feat worthwhile. That dynamic only increases as you get further into the mod. It will make gearing much easier when your gear options expand. I think it is both needed and wanted.

Tyr is right when he says there are some nice heavy armors. And heavy armor would be an excellent choice if there were no infliction mobs in this module.
But there are, and for me this means I try to minimize the number of incoming hits. Medium armor offers up to 3 more AC than heavy armor, which is significant.
