Now that the beta linux patch for the final nwn patch, 1.69, is available, we'll be converting 2 servers over to the patch, in order to participate in playtest and hopefully ensure that this final patch is problem-free. There will be a 25% boos to experience during playtest on those two servers only, to encourage the discovery of any problems. You will, of course, have to download the 1.69 beta patch and install it to login to these servers, and that will in turn prevent your logging in to the non-patched servers without reverting. I'll post again when we've made the switch.

It is possible to have 2 NWN installations (or at least it was back in the 1.67 -> 1.68 looooong beta period) which should make it possible to log into both, if you are smart.
You will need 2 icons on your desktop, of course.
I am not certain how playable in 1.68, a 1.69 beta character would be. Sounds potentially risky to me. But this at least gives people a chance to dedicate a character or several to 1.69 beta, while still being able to log in to 1.68 servers for hell runs and such with their "old" characters.

I seriously doubt that it will adversely affect individual characters as most of it will be game angine and bug fix related. After all you don't have to create your character on one of the beta servers to play it.

There's been no indication in the patch notes of any changes to bicfile, which would be the only basis of incompatibility of characters between the two patches.

Isn't there a new character class (purple knights or something). How would that work?

How would that work with what? If you are asking with respect to the bicfile, it's just a differnt number in the class field.

Any new characters made with Purple Dragon Knight class levels will be unable to log in to 1.68 servers.

When is this likely to happen? Will it be before or after the increase to 8 servers? And, how long would the test period likely last?
And, just to be clear for my slow-to-grasp-things self, let me see if I understand. If we download the 1.69 patch in time for the playtest, we can play only on those two servers. If we do it after the playtest, we can play on the remaining servers until the overall conversion, at which time we won't be able to play on HG at all unless we download 1.69. IS that right?

This is likely to happen after the increase to 8 servers. It will almost definitely not happen until the new year, since I have to port Exalt and our other engine hacks to 1.69.
You can have both 1.68 and 1.69 installs. After 1.69's release, we will eventually update all the servers to 1.69, at which point 1.69 will be required to play.
There will be a CEP update after 1.69 is released as well. Though I haven't discussed this with Funky, it's likely we'll do the CEP update at the same time.

Given the CEP's track record, I'd expect at least a several week delay before they have anything released, probably more.

Note: Anyone that took the Enhanced hak from HGWiki will have to have the original dialogue.tlk file or else the patch can not be downloaded. So make sure you have it. ^_^
