Hi! I'm not sure if I should post here, but I need help in this matter. I'm connecting to the net via a cable modem, but using an SMC7004VBR router, because the net connection is split between this PC and a laptop. As long as the laptop is on, I'm having horrible speed, with 500 and 1000+ ping and I don't know what should I do to make it work normally. Anyone could help please? Trickypriest

The router model rings a bell.. do you know what version firmware you're running on the router? I seem to recall one version had a connectivity problem, though I might be thinking of the wrong model.
Also, are there any applications on the Laptop that may generate high traffic? Like BitTorrent, limewire, etc.

The inner program says, "Current Firmware Version: R1.00 (Tue, Jul 03 2003)"
Another mystery, that whenever I reset the router with it's button on its back, the speed resumes to normal for a few seconds.

what protocols are running on the laptop? If I recall from my classes, some older protocols( i think ipx and NetBIOS) use a lot of bandwidth with link state info. Could also be a virus/spyware issue(more likely IMO)
