Hey there,
Shut down computer last night, as per usual. go to turn it on this morning, and it won't stay on for more than 2-3 seconds. don't get bios loaded, screen doesn't even register the comp is active, isn't even enough time for the on mobo screen to register any errors. About to start dismantling, but wondered if anyone had had this problem before and had any ideas?

Power supply would be the first thing I'd suspect.

Ok, so I took the mobo, cpu, heatsink out and tried booting with the psu from our other computer. Got same response. I then tried with one of the RAM sticks from the other computer (known to be working) and comp still powers off after about 3 seconds max. If i run it without any ram however I get the error beeps, but there is no power loss. Are the RAM slots on my mobo faulty, or does the cpu not initiate till after the RAM is verified? (meaning taking out RAM stops a CPU error occuring?). I might be on completely the wrong track, but not sure what else to try next, so any help is much appreciated.

With the video card back in it seems to boot a little further, managed to post once, but on subsequent attempts powerout either at code 00 (hardware initialization) or around C!, C3, 52, which are all memory loading or testing (680i Sli mobo). does this mean nything to anyone?

I swapped out the cpu for another one and still got the same errors, however the CPU I took out booted fine in the other comp... think this looks like a dead mobo, anyone know how I can test it

Get another main board, plug all the components back in. If the computer works you have found your problem. Ok so it isnt helpful but its what I would do

It does sound like a Mobo failure to me; as a long shot, you could try resetting the BIOS - this usually involves either:-
a) changing a jumper on the Mobo or b) disconnecting from power socket, removing CMOS battery (looks like watch battery) from Mobo, wait for a minute, replace battery, then reconnect power.
you would need to research in manual or on the manufacturers tech support site to see which method is applicable.

Thanks guys.. had already reset the bios with the jumpers.. murphuyslawagain.. that's pretty much what I had done, with the mainboard from our other comp I installed my cpu, vid card and RAM and it would post fine. Going to look around and see what I can afford to get as a replacement mainboard.
