There are a bunch of direct-connect apps for HG (arf2 etc). I would highly suggest making one of these "standard must have" updates to the game for HG users.

Direct-connect programs only work on Windows and, by extension, NWN running in Wine on Linux/Mac. It does not, however, work on the native linux and mac clients (nwmain simply ignores +connect). If someone were to write a cross-platform NWN Starter, the best way to handle it would be to insert the address at the top of NWN's history in addition to using +connect. That way, you only need to cancel the gamespy connection or click on History in order to get to the server you want on a non-windows NWN.
Also, someone is working on a master server and substitute matchmaking service for NWN for future use, which might help, depending on how Atari and/or Bioware handles it (i.e. whether they at least provide an obvious link to a patch to nwmain to support these services).

I remember when PXO dropped their game host listing server down a flight of stairs. The company was nearly bankrupt and had no intention of fixing it.
The community pulled together and developed their own web based server browser. It worked well and lasted years. You could even click on the link in the server list and it would fire up the game and connect you to the host.
I see the same potential if not more in the NWN community. There are people so well versed in how NWServer and the client communicate that apps like NWNExalt and NWNx don't just exist, they change the way we play the game and raise the limitations on what we can do with it.
Coming up with a way to redirect the server announcements to a new list is do-able. It will just take them some time.
I'm wondering if there will be any costs involved, and how we could contribute to help move this along.
