Hey folks! so my whole life I've looked for an online game that I can get into, I've played many many many games, in an effort to attain this goal, but nothing ever grabs me, everything just feels like numbers and code, and I want a community to escape to, escapism being my main reason for gaming. I'm mostly inspired by games like .hack, where they paint this image of people bonding, and a community that heavily interacts, I want to give this game a serious shot, because it seems extremely niche and counter culture, very far removed from the meat grindy homogenized MMOs that' i've come to get used to, play til level 30, and throw my hands up, and leave. I miss the days of Phantasy Star Online, and Everquest, when people were excited to get on and interact, and online gaming was new and wonderful, and people got pumped about logging into a new world.
So I will finally get to the point here, what are your recommendations for getting the most out of my experience with HG?

Welcome to the server! Unfortunately it’s not the easiest question to answer because everyone has different tastes and want different things out of the game.
One of the first things to decide is what class your first character should be: if you’re just here for a bit of fun or really love a certain class, you can definitely just choose your favourite and go. But a bit of information first to guide your decision:
*A common problem faced in the 30-40 areas are that many of the bosses are resistant to most damage types apart from Exotics (Magic/Divine/Positive/Negative), so a class that can deal those damage types is nice.
*A common problem faced in the 40-60 areas are that there are usually large numbers of relatively weak enemies, so classes that can damage/kill targets in an AoE are far more efficient and usually end up feeling more fun.
*A common problem faced in 60+ areas is the need for ‘core classes’ in the party (Arcane/Bard/Cleric/Druid), since most of the runs were designed with having these roles filled within the party.
The solution to all three of these is to play one of the offensive core classes - Arcane (Sorcerer or Wizard), Caster Cleric or Caster Druid are all safe choices that I would recommend. They keep your options open and let you contribute effectively to any party.
Outside of class choice, some random pointers: *Use the Wiki! (It has a useful map too) *Check out the Wiki’s “Accomplishments” and “Quests” page, those are what you should be aiming to complete on your 1-40 journey *Ask any questions in the Newbie channel, by typing “!newbie <message>”

So I will finally get to the point here, what are your recommendations for getting the most out of my experience with HG? Higher Ground is designed as a party server and thus works best in a group. The best thing to do is find someone to play with on a regular basis. Failing that, I would strongly recommend you play a caster class (cleric/sorc/druid/wizard) or a self buffing tank class - (Paladin, blackguard, ranger, possibly bard) or quasiclasses: (Lash, Warchanter, bane knight, staffmaster). I recommend this because HG is built around party synergy of casters and tanks, and if you think you might end up stuck soloing for a bit, it's best to have some kind of magical capabilities when starting out because HG is also a high magic world. Also remember that you do not have to get everything right about your first character. You can change classes through reincarnation (respec) as long as you do it before finishing the immortal run. You can also gain new subraces for your account and build better "cores" (Arcane, druid, cleric, bard) once you get those better subraces. You can do this as early as level 35 if you have a benefactor to help you. Otherwise I recommend waiting until you're immortal at least. -S

All Awesome answers, I'll definitely dive into the wiki, and look up more about "immortal" and pour over the map, so if I generally like to play the "knight in shining armor" archetype, and it sounds like magic is the way to go, would a Paladin be looking like a strong choice?

Any divine tank in a shining armor will do so Champion of Torm, Paladin, Blackguard are all strong choices. It won't be a "caster" - it will be a I-Smash or a Smiter (still smash). I'd recommend finding a group of players to play with - or even just one person you enjoy to play with. The module highly revolves around group play. If you are looking for the solo adventure, then a Mage (sorc/wizard) will probably suit you better. You can pull off pretty much any class - even much weaker ones than the Paladin you're oogling at - if you find a friend to share the adventure. When it comes to the point where you'd for whatever reason not be able to pull off your class even with a friend, you will have more knowledge about what might be able to do the job and whether that might suit you better or not.

Starting off can be rough, there's a lot to learn. But the module is definately soloable to a point once you know where to find gear and how to build per the server changes.
I find you can get to about 35 ish before it becomes a real struggle solo. After 35 some tags are harder and I doubt the immo run can be done solo... I've certainly never tried. After 40.. its all group play. That said... I find it hard to group around 30-40. Usually tagging and there's restrictions on your group when doing that. Add to that, I am a filthy casual player so people will always outlevel me inbetween play sessions. After IMMO its a bit easier, you can watch for run announcements and hop on a run.

That makes sense, I'm currently spending most of my time pouring through the wiki, and learning before I jump in, I definitely don't want to give the wrong impression, my goal is to find cool people to play with

Hi, belated welcome to the forums! We're currently working to make things more accomodating to solo play, while we prepare to transition to the Enhanced Edition. That includes adding a henchman cleric for hire, and tweaking some of the more annoying bosses. Hopefully you find the server to your liking. We didn't deliberately set out to be counterculture, and I have never really thought of us that way, but I guess if you compare us to mainstream MMOs and console games...yeah. Welcome to the server! Funky
