There has been much discussion in recent years about HG migration to EE, but clearly, this is a huge amount of work and perhaps, there is also an intention to have the server work on both editions at the same time, which would be an even bigger challenge, not to mention the 'changes' in how the software and online multiplayer is handled.
The most obvious solution would be to have multi-box support for EE which already seems to be possible.
Given that NWN EE PW's are quite popular, with up to 50 on a single server, HG would probably do very well there and it could also benefit from the curated content system which automatically installs the required content.
There is also a great opportunity to develop, patch up and tidy up. Many have spoken about improving the low level experience for example. How about having some +65 tags, all the way to 80? Could HG benefit from the latest version of CEP?
The truth is, if people are multi-boxing, in a way that is good but it also shows the fragility of HG. That it is hanging on a thread, a handful of people using multi-boxing and with such complexities to achieve the party experience.
The future of HG, really hangs in the balance it feels and a move to EE, despite the intensive work that would be required, might give it further longevity and also make it more accessible to those who like me, found even the preparation of HG, to be highly complex.
Again, one of the many changes that has happened over the last 20 years, auto install without knowing how to use command, batch files and so on. (NWN not quite that old I know)
Perhaps there are others who have better insight into some of the complexities involved with the DE - EE migration?
