Hey, this is a wonderful idea. Subraces are one of the many wonderful things on this server. I don't see the need to make all subraces available for [testors], as I do mine on paper, if I bother to plan them out ahead of time at all, so don't pay any attention to my opinion. Will there be low level subraces, (e.g.Quarter-Elf (+1 dex only), or Quarter-Dwarf (+1 con only)), mid-level (e.g. Helf - half elf, half halfling) and higher level subraces (e.g. plane-touched, giants, etc) which drop in appropriate levels, as the weapons do? Or will they they all be subraces we all really want and be dropped in areas where the current subrace books are dropped? I like the thought of being limited to one character for these subraces, and being able to remake it if one desires.

I also write everything down on paper, but some of the important facts only really come togeather for a good build after you see how well everything fits togeather. You can't see that on paper, you can only guess that.

I absolutely hate the idea of one use per find. First off, it doesn't accomplish anything, since there isn't a "problem" of someone having 6 illithid characters or 4 minotaurs. Subrace stats lend themselves to certain uses, and not many people play the same build type twice, or three times...so multiple uses of subraces isn't a "problem"
Also, I personally *collect* subraces...because its something to do at level 60. I currently have every single subrace accessed, just to do it. And having counter oriented subraces diminishes that. I'll probably never play them anyway, but I like that once you unlock something, it STAYS unlocked.
And I agree, if you make a character and decide that it sucks and you want to make a different variation, well, then you're screwed and anyone but the richest person won't be able to replace it.
I think subraces are an excellent achievement for those who don't have time to continually camp rares or do the huge runs, and making them oneshots diminishes that.

I think making them perma-unlocks and having half a dozen different builds per person wandering around diminishes their achievement value. Having them one character per unlock makes them that much rarer, and as such true collectors would strive to acquire more unlocks. Horrible analogy, but just because you find a dollar on the street does not mean you possess the entire Mint.
As far as I know, these new subraces are going to be as far apart from the current subraces that they will need a new system to govern their use. And if they're not that powerful, the system could always be extended downward for balance purposes. Overall though the system is not a hard-limit one shot per subrace system, it is a direct proportionality to how much time you put into it. If you are constantly searching for more of these subraces, you'll acquire more new unlocks, to the point that there will be no difference between the availability of these subraces and the subraces before it. However, it will require you to put the time in to get to that point.

Yeah, can't see how setting them to one each hurts collectability at all; if anything it makes them more valuable because there is some point to having more than one. Not really planning to do this to the old subraces, except possibly rakshasa and illithid, since they are the only ones on par with the forthcoming ones. Funky

*shrug* Well, I don't like it. Thats my opinion. I liked subraces because they're something that you can't lose or have taken from you, and its something casual gamer types can achieve with effort. I also prefer to have to unlock them in ways other than books, because that is an individual quest-like achievement and isn't something that you can just trade for - that diminishes the earning of it also.
There aren't many 'quests' around on the server - like bring X and Y through these hoops to get Z. I think subraces as they are, are an important part of questing here and I think if anything questing should be expanded. Anyone can camp loot spawns until they get what they want, given enough time. Doing something questlike is better in my eyes as an achievement, to foster group work, and a better game experience than just hitting the Mantakaloss loot spawns ad naseum until you hit that magic 1%.
My opinion is that this change is a bad one. Take it for what its worth.
