Could some help me with the basics for building a Palemaster? Looks like there are some nice enhancements for the HG palemaster, but I'm a bit lost on how the PM operates. What stats are important? What is a good level distribution? Is the PM primarily a spellcaster? In the HG palemaster description, it gives an example of a 10Wiz/30PM casting a finger of death... I wouldn't think a palemaster could cast finger of death (8th level spell) with only 10 wizard levels. Help!

A 10wiz/30pm would have to learn most of its spells from scrolls. Also a pm on HG would mostly just cast necromancy spells, since its other spells are much lower in level. Intelligence is the most important followed by constituion. Also the changes in the spell power word kill has reduced the advantage of having a PM in the party.

PMs continue to get casterlevels per heir modified progression. 1/3 for normal and 7/6s (I think?) for necro. What casterlevel they wind up with depends on how many wiz levels they took. Max is 10 + (50/3) = 26 for non-necro and 10 + (350/6) = 68 for necro. Funky

Forgive me noobishness on this, but are you saying that a 10Wiz/30pm would have spells slots above level 5? I understand that a PM would likely only be effective casting necro spells due to caster level considerations... -Pawn

Yes a 30 pm will be able to cast lvl 9 spells, but all would have to be learned from a scroll

To find scrolls, poke around in the nasty places, or simply ask your resident wizard. Nicely. With blank parchment in your hands.
