Hi, I'm pretty new to the game so I apologize if this is trivial, but I had a few questions regarding the game's mechanics that I was hoping someone could answer:
1) Is there a cap on how high you can raise an ability with equipment per level? For example, I've been trying to pump up my dexterity, but at level 25 I seem to max out at around 35 dexterity regardless of the equipment that should be raising it higher.
2) What is the difference between 'enhancement bonus' and 'attack bonus' on a weapon? I'm currently using a 'resounding short sword' which gives a +7 enhancement bonus AND a +7 attack bonus. To my understanding the 'enhancement bonus' grants you +7 to hit and +7 piercing damage, and the 'attack bonus' just adds +7 to hit. So in total the sword should give +14 to hit and +7 piercing damage. But when I equip the sword, it only gives +7 to hit and +7 damage. What does the additional '+7 attack bonus' do then?
Thanks for your help.

1) +12
2) Enhance also adds to damage as well as attack, and helps to overcome damage reduction, unlike attack bonuses.

2) Right, so the sword i used as an example should give a +14 to attack, and +7 damage, correct?

No, what Funky forgot to mention is that Attack and Enhancement Bonuses do not stack for the purposes of calculating AB.

Then whats the use of having + to attack bonus, if it doesnt add anything, since the enchantment bonus covers it all?

I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, that the attack bonus is actually for hitting, but some monster can only be hit with a certain enhasement bonus. At least that's kind of what I remember from the PNP game, 2nd ed though.

That is correct.
For purposes here, the toolset has items with +enhancement (both to hit and damage) as costing more than +attack only. Meaning you can make items that hit and do the +fire, +magic, +negative whatever damage and stick more of them onto an item than you could with +enhancement

The reason we have both attack and enhancement on some items is to increase their level requirement. Funky

Greetings, ocath's most recent: Hitting and damaging are also separate--making contact and having that contact hurt. It seems that many monsters have soak (eg. 15/+4) which means you can hit them all day long with a +3 or less weapon and unless you do more than 15 pts of dmg, all of your hits will be ineffective. If your weapon is +4 or better, then all of the physical dmg will ignore the soak. Cheers, The Dancer
