I know this should probably be put into the 'Off-Topic' category, BUT, I figured that more ppl probably read the drunken monk threads, this is important enuff to get your attention. This is a public service announcement. [glow=red,2,300]watchdog.com[/glow] This is a website that everyone, ESPECIALLY PARENTS should know about. When u go there, type in your address, and b 4 your very eyes, the number of registered sex offenders will appear b 4 your very naive eyes. I admit, b 4 I started working as a Corrections Officer, I was Naive as well. And for the first 3 or 4 months I worked in the jail, the sex offender's housed there looked as normal as your local postman, grocer, or phermacist. These people could be anyone, anywhere, and can strike at any time. Remember ladies and gentlemen, it only takes a second, and your child could be gone forever. I am not making this post to scare anyone, or to make anyone paranoid about every dealing they might have with an unknown individual. Simply wanted to raise a little awareness about this growing plague on our society. And remember, when you are looking at the list of 'registered' sex offenders in your area remember 2 things, first, these are only the ones who have obeyed the law and REGISTERED!! 2nd, these r only the ones who have been CAUGHT!! When I typed in my address, in Cedar Park, Texas, I got 90 in a 5 nile radius.........90!!!!!! I would ask, that, if you do look up your area, you post in this thread how many you have in a 5 mile radius of your home, help me raise awareness, not just for our HG community, but to everyone you know. We, as parents are the first line of defense for our children, against these soulless predators. BE AWARE!!

Good post Aeternus, and its always good to be careful with your family, but one thing to keep in mind is "sex offender" is a broad term... i know alot of college kids that get titled "sex offender" for being cought streaking the lawn at UVA, when they are prickish enough to press charges for a campus tradition, as one example.

Aye, but being a nitpick I just have to say that really, your children are your childrens first defense, xD - tell them and it helps enourmaly (although I agree children tend to be .... carefree.... xD). Still, alot of people seem to think that protecting their kids is the same as hiding them from the harsh, cruel world... its not, ignorance might be nice, xD, but its just going to be more painfull when they wake up, xD.
xD, xD.

Omg,, i was dumbfounded when i did a search on my neighborhood, Their are 130 in 5 mi. radius,, that is 130 to manny if you ask me,, and the worst part ,, a guy who lives 3 door down from me,, is ON THE LIST, i never even would have thought,, Now im kinda unsure as what to do, Do i make the other parents on the block aware, or do i assume,, he has been reformed,, either way the thought of him being so close to my family is to say the least a bit unsettleing,, THANX FOR THE EYE OPENER

Although I'll say I must agree. It's so easy to see the fault in one's parent's.... @masterranger, whatever you decide, good luck!

And on the count of 3 .... PANIC! PANIC NOW! EVERYONE!
Most reliable statistics show that children are most at danger from people they know, often family members.
With modern methods of collecting, storing and distributing data, we now have access to these lists. This does NOT mean that our kids are at any more risk than 10, 50 or 100 years ago.
Does this list show what offence they commited? As mentioned, "sex offences" cover everythign from streaking, looking at naughty pictures, through to the most vile acts. I do not know the full extent of USA law, but I beleive some practices considered perfectly normal by some are outlawed in some States.
Do not get caught up the hype that UK went through, including a paediatrician being hararssed, beaten up and chased out of town for having a job title that sounded a bit like peadophile.
Take care. Protect your family. Do Not Panic.

I just checked, in Canada we do not have access to this information. It is probably unfortunate but it probably also reduces panic and people taking the law into their own hands. Someone mentioned, streaking in public might get you on that list which is true as it would fall under Exposure, but I would want a flasher to be on the list. Motto: keep your clothes on in public.

The thing to ask yourself is, what will you do with that information that will actually have an impact on your child's safety? Funky

I checked out the site being a mother of 4 that live with their dad so I do not have much to go on. I wish they did have that kind of list in Canada which is where I live. The site does show by color what kind of sex offense each was charged with. I would not panic as much as make sure you kids are highly enformed. Even a 4 yr old can understand good and bad touches. Most times children understand more than adults cause their imagination has not been rotted by growing up And yes it is more like to be a relative ei one of the parents or aunts and uncles that sexually offend children but there are those that are not. Since this kind of thing has a personal touch for me I have had to give my 2 cents even though they are Canadian cents

I do know of one person who is on the list for urinating in public while drunk. It was up to the police officer how to write the ticket and the DA and judge on whether to pursue the charge. For whatever reason, they chose the maximum. Now the man is on the list for life. The man doesn't leave his house. Family brings him groceries. A great example of small town politics in action.

Unfortunately I would like more infomation. I would like to also see a listing that I can filter for offences. Personally, I don't care if a guy got a ticket for uninating in public. What I do care about are the hard core crimes. And then I can filter the list to what I feel is one of those crimes. I can give you any statistic and manipulate it so that it shocks you. I just want infomation that is relevant.
I'm glad a site like this exisits. I just want a filter.

And then I want to let my whole family know what people who live nearby have done if I think they are in danger.

Maybe a scarlet letter? Seriously, I'd rather just keep em locked up for life than condeming them in that fashion. Would prevent futher crimes, and they aren't going to lead a normal life anyway, once branded. Funky
