First piece of advice: don't smoke. Second piece of advice:, don't even bother with the laptop lock, the lock won't stop someone from just grabbing the laptop and then breaking the lock when hes out of sight. Unless you have that thing nailed to the ground or something, you really shouldn't just leave it lying anywhere. You might as well have a password or something, because thats all the lock really is, a second security check. It inconveniences the thief, but you lose in the end either or. Really, if you can't trust the people around you not to take your stuff, the best way to make sure your stuff stays protected is to make sure that if someone is taking it, your fist is in reach of thier face.

i don't expect it to be some sort of miracle, they can't steal it bit, i know its simple to crush the lock w/ pliers and take the thing, but if i'm on campus at the library or a campus study area and i need to go the bathroom, a laptop lock should help to make it more difficult for people to just pick up and walk off with my laptop (if they want to steal my anthology of shakespeare well that's still 60 bucks but not a computer)
i mean i can see my laptop from the window when i smoke, but today for instance i left my headphones in the car, and didn't want to have to pack all my crap up.
anyone who leaves their computer unattended for more than 10 minutes is naive in thinking it won't get stolen, and the lock is really about buying time

I would just go with a bike lock in this instance. For a "few" minutes you will be fine as someone who is looking to steal, will pick the easy pocket.

The one with a motion alarm (DefCon) might be a bit more of a deterrent, as they are pretty damn harsh when they go off.
The other cable locks like Targus, etc. usually come in 2 flavors, one with combo (4 #'s I think) and one with keys.
Either way, I would rehash what was previously stated, they are a short deterrent, and might be good for 10 mins or so while you use the facilities. I would also suggest a good poeron / hardrive password and locking your screen when you leave it.

i was going to go with a nice one that locks into the video port (motherboard) but got a good deal on a targus one, i figure for my smoke breaks and bathroom breaks a visable deterrant is all i'll need.
